AUSTIN, Texas - Utah State men's tennis (4-2) captured a 4-2 win against Washington (1-2) in the consolation round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend played here Saturday.
"Today was a great effort and I was really proud of the way we stayed tough, especially after losing the doubles point so close," said head coach James Wilson. "The guys didn't hang their heads, they got back to work and they were able to get four decisive points. I hope we can keep building off of this win and be ready to play BYU on Thursday."
Washington won the doubles point as senior Peter Bertran and sophomore Jakub Wokcik won, 7-6 (4), at the No. 3 spot against Utah State junior Duro Opacic and sophomore Felipe Acosta, while No. 15 ranked sophomore Jack Davis and senior Piers Foley posted a 6-3 win at the No. 1 spot against USU freshman Isaac Arevalo Gómez and sophomore Jose Carvajal. At the No. 2 spot, USU junior Sergiu Bucur and freshman Rithvik Bollipalli beat UW senior Enzo Sommer and freshman Ewen Lumsden, 6-1.
Arevalo opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-3, straight-set win against Sommer on court one. Bucur followed suit with a 6-1, 7-5, straight-set win against Foley on court two. Opacic lost his match in straight sets on court three to Davis, 4-6, 4-6, as the Huskies tied things up at two-all. Bollipalli put the Aggies on top on court six with a 7-6 (2), 6-2, win against freshman Adam Torocsik to set it up for Carvajal on court five. Carvajal faced senior Sebastian Hawken, where Carvajal had to win two tiebreakers in both sets to capture the win as he won by a 7-6 (1), 7-6 (4) final.
Utah State next takes on in state-rival BYU (4-2) at the Sports Academy & Racquet Club on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 5 p.m. (MT).
