LOGAN, Utah – Utah State volleyball pushed Wyoming to the bitter end Thursday, as the Aggies dropped a five-set home match to the Cowgirls.
After a slow start that resulted in a 25-13 loss in the first set, the Aggies bounced back to take set two, 25-20. USU led early on in the third set, but the Cowgirls earned the 25-21 win. Results swapped again in the fourth, as Utah State hit a blistering .367 to win 25-23. The back-and-forth match continued as the fifth set came down to a tight finish as Wyoming closed out the match in a 15-13 victory.
Utah State had three players with double-digit kills Thursday night, the most of any match this season. Freshman outside hitter Hailey Cuff led the team with 17 kills, her second-straight match in double figures. She was followed by sophomore outside Whitney Solosabal and senior opposite side hitter Izzie Belnap with 13 kills apiece, a season-best for Belnap. The Aggies recorded 55 kills overall, their second-highest total in that category this season.
Senior setter Heidi Carpenter recorded her second double-double in as many matches, finishing the night with 21 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Kelee Call saw her first significant action of the season, leading the team with eight blocks, while adding two kills and three digs.
Utah State didn't see its first lead until the second set, but the teams went on to create 27 lead changes throughout the five sets. The back-and-forth feel continued through the end of the fifth set, as USU led 13-11 before the Cowgirls scored four-straight points to end the match. Wyoming was able to take advantage of its serve with 10 service aces in the contest, but the Aggies out-blocked the Cowgirls, 14-9.
In all, USU hit .199 (55-24-156), while Wyoming hit .230 (64-27-161).
The Aggies close the week on Saturday, Oct. 19, when they take on league-leading Colorado State (17-1, 7-0 MW) at 1 p.m.
