Game Recap: Softball |
RENO, Nev. – Utah State softball wrapped up its first weekend of Mountain West competition Sunday, falling to Nevada, 11-2, in six innings.

With the loss, Utah State falls to 9-13 on the season and 1-2 in Mountain West play. Nevada moves to 15-9 overall and 2-1 in conference action with the win.

The game started out even-keeled, as the two teams took turns scoring. Nevada was first to strike, scoring a runner on a double in the bottom of the first. The Aggies quickly matched that in the top of the second. Freshman second baseman Kenzie Bolin led off with a single, advancing on a sac bunt, and a single from junior outfielder Ryann Holmes brought Bolin home to even the score.

Utah State took the lead in the top of the third, capitalizing on a pair of Wolf Pack errors. Junior outfielder Riley Plogger first reached on a throwing error, while sophomore outfielder Stephanie Reed singled. A fielder's choice combined with another defensive mistake gave Plogger the chance to score, putting the Aggies up, 2-1. Unfortunately that lead didn't last, as Nevada added another pair of runs in the bottom of the inning. The first six Wolf Pack batters reached base that inning, bringing the two runs in and forcing a Utah State pitching change.

The Aggies added another three hits in the fifth inning, loading the bases, but were unable to score. Nevada, on the other hand, came alive offensively, plating six runs in the fifth and another two in the sixth, including three two-run home runs. The final homer in the sixth inning gave Nevada it's nine-run advantage, ending the game.

In all, Nevada out-hit Utah State, 10-6. The Aggies had four errors in the game, while the Wolf Pack had two.

Utah State has its first in-state non-conference game this week, playing at Weber State on Wednesday, March 20, at 3 p.m. The Aggies will then open their home slate in a three-game series against UNLV. USU and the Rebels will open the weekend on Friday, March 22, at 3 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. game on Saturday, March 23. The series will conclude on Sunday, March 24, at noon.
