SAN JOSE, Calif. – Utah State softball opened its weekend series at San José State Friday, falling to the Spartans, 5-0.
With the loss, USU falls to 13-26 overall and 4-14 in Mountain West play. SJSU improves to 30-15 on the year and 10-6 against conference opponents.
Utah State had at least one base runner in all but one inning Friday, but was never able to bring one home. Senior catcher
Bailey Lewis earned the first USU hit of the game in the second inning, while junior outfielder
Ryann Holmes and freshman second baseman
Kenzie Bolin each added a single later in the game. The Aggies also drew three walks in the game.
San José State did not start scoring until the fourth inning, adding on in each trip to the plate. After loading the bases on three-straight singles, a sac fly and a Utah State error brought the first two runs across. The Spartans then scored on a double in the fifth, while a double and another Aggie error brought in the final runs in the bottom of the sixth. Utah State had a chance in the top of the seventh after Sophomore third baseman
Kennedy Hira was hit by a pitch and Holmes reached on a fielder's choice, but a strikeout ended the game.
In all, the Spartans out-hit the Aggies, 11-3, while USU also had two errors in the game. Sophomore
Delaney Hull pitched the complete game for the Aggies, striking out two batters and walking another two.
Utah State and San José State will continue the series on Saturday, April 27, at 1 p.m. (MT), with the weekend finale set for noon on Sunday, April 28.
