LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball picked up the series-opening win over New Mexico Friday, as the Aggies topped the Lobos, 7-6, behind five extra-base hits.
Of USU's six hits Friday, five of them earned the team extra bases as it hit four home runs and one triple. Three of the four home runs came on the first pitch. Senior catcher
Bailey Lewis hit two dingers in a game for the first time, while sophomore outfielder
Stephanie Reed had the first out-of-the-park hit of her career. Senior first baseman
Bailee Trapp hit her seventh home run of the season, and sophomore third baseman
Kennedy Hira added her first-career triple.
With the win, Utah State moves to 12-18 on the season, including a 3-6 record in Mountain West play. New Mexico falls to 10-27 overall and 1-9 against conference opponents.
New Mexico took its only lead of the day in the top of the first inning, as a runner scored from second on a double. That lead didn't last, as the Aggies answered in the bottom half of the first with Reed's one-pitch home run. Hira led-off the second inning with her triple, hitting the right field fence before the ball bounced back into play. Lewis then brought her home with her home run to left field.
The Aggies extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the third. Reed drew a walk early on, scoring on Trapp's homer. The Lobos pulled back within a run in the top of the fourth, a rough pitching inning for the Aggies. After two walks, a single brought a run across, while a pair of wild pitches would score another two runners. Utah State responded quickly though, pulling back ahead in the home half of the inning. Junior second baseman
Ryann Holmes was hit by a pitch, crossing the plate on Lewis' opposite field home run.
Back-to-back hits, including a home run helped New Mexico cut into the Aggie lead in the top of the fifth, but the defense held to not allow further damage. Freshman pitcher
Kapri Toone struck out the side in the top of the sixth, and ended the game on a swinging strikeout in the seventh. Utah State got three more runners on base through the fifth and sixth innings, but were unable to capitalize.
On the day, New Mexico out-hit Utah State, 9-6, while the Lobos also had two errors in the game. Sophomore
Delaney Hull made the start in the circle for the Aggies, throwing four complete innings and earning the win. Toone pitched the final three innings to pick up her second save of the season. Hull struck out two batters, while Toone matched her season high with five strikeouts. Together the pair walked five batters.
Utah State and New Mexico will continue the series on Saturday, April 6, at 4 p.m., with the weekend finale set for noon on Sunday, April 7.
