MORAGA, Calif. – Utah State volleyball ended its weekend slate of matches at the Bay Area Invitational Saturday, dropping a pair of three-set matches to Cornell and Saint Mary's.
At the conclusion of the tournament, freshman outside hitter
Hailey Cuff was named to the all-tournament team.
Opening the day against Cornell, the Big Red controlled the match from start to finish. The Aggies got the closest in a 25-21 decision in the second set, but Cornell posted dominating wins of 25-13 and 25-11 in the first and third sets, respectively.
Freshman outside hitter
Madi Brunatti led the Aggie attack against Cornell, tallying seven kills. USU managed to keep a positive hitting percentage, but struggled to find any momentum.
Returning to the court that night, the Aggies took on tournament co-host Saint Mary's. The match against the Gaels was the closest of the weekend, with the first and third sets ending at 25-21, and the second at 25-23.
Utah State saw its first leads of the weekend against Saint Mary's leading at one point in both the first and third sets. An 8-0 run in the third highlighted the night, giving the Aggies a 9-2 lead. The Gaels bounced back, however, answering with a seven-point run of their own. Another late surge pushed Saint Mary's ahead for the final time to secure the win.
Cuff led the Aggies with 12 kills on the night, and senior setter
Heidi Carpenter added 26 assists. USU out-blocked Saint Mary's, 9-6, and finished the match hitting .198 (34-16-91).
The Aggies will close their non-conference season with a pair of in-state contests next week. USU will host Utah Valley on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m., and will play at Weber State on Saturday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m.
