Game Recap: Softball |
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – Utah State softball capped a perfect weekend at the Golden State Classic with an 8-0 six-inning win over Seton Hall Sunday.

With the win, the Aggies secured a 5-0 record in the tournament, recording its first tournament sweep since the 1980 season. Additionally, the five-game winning streak is the longest for the USU team since 2017.

"It was a great weekend, going 5-0. The kids played really well the whole weekend. The thing I'm most excited about is that we expected to win. That's what our plan is, that's our goal. We expect to go out and win," said USU head coach Steve Johnson. "We won every game in a different way, every game had its different battles. Our team played excellent this weekend. It's what we expected going into the season, and hopefully we can use this as momentum to carry on for the rest the year."

Utah State scored a run before it had even garnered its first hit, Sunday. In the bottom of the second, the Aggies loaded the bases in the first three trips to the plate. Sophomore catcher Gabriella Jimenez and senior second baseman Ryann Holmes were walked, while junior third baseman Kennedy Hira was hit by a pitch. Senior designated player Allanah Alvarado drove the run in on a full-count walk of her own.

Following a Seton Hall pitching change, junior outfielder Stephanie Reed singled on a ball that bounced fair. Hira scored on the play, but Holmes got stuck in a run-down between second and third base. The Aggies went on to draw one more walk in the inning before a fielder's choice ended it.

The Aggies extended their lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning. Freshman outfielder Mazie Macfarlane led-off with a bunt single, while Orozco drove her to third with a single to right center. Freshman first baseman Makenzie Macfarlane reached first on a fielder's choice to send her sister home, and was able to take second on a Seton Hall throwing error. A strong hit from Jimenez then gave Makenzie Macfarlane time to score.

Not done yet, Utah State came out strong in the bottom of the sixth, as well. After one out, Reed was walked, while Plogger beat the defense for a single. Mazie Macfarlane laid down a sac bunt to advance the runners before Orozco cleared the bases with a home run to center field. Makenzie Macfarlane followed with a single to the same area. Junior Kayla Fielder entered the game as a pinch runner, while Seton Hall made another pitching change. Jimenez then drew her second walk of the game before Hira doubled to right center. With Fielder's run scoring on the play, the Aggies took the necessary eight-run lead to invoke the run rule and end the game.

Defensively, Utah State never allowed more than four batters to come to the plate during the game. The Pirates had four hits on the day, with no runners advancing past second base. Seton Hall looked to advance a runner to third in the third inning, but she was called out on interference, ending the inning.

Aggie sophomore Kapri Toone pitched the complete game Sunday, recording her second run-rule shutout of the weekend. She struck out six batters to tie her career-high, walking just one. Toone had three defensive assists, which also matches her career best.

Utah State returns to action in Phoenix, Ariz., next weekend, when it plays in the Grand Canyon Purple Classic. The Aggies will play Grand Canyon and CSUN twice, ending the tournament with one game against Drake.
