LA JOLLA, Calif. - Utah State softball (8-10) ended its run at the San Diego Classic with an 11-0 shutout victory against Yale (2-3) on Sunday.
Six different Aggies recorded a hit in the game. Senior first baseman
Lexi Orozco led the way with two hits, both of which were two-run homers. Orozco also led the team defensively with six putouts.
Orozco's two home runs against the Bulldogs put her career total at 35, just four bombs shy from tying the all-time program record.
The first Orozco homer, which also brought home senior designated player
Gabriella Jimenez, came in the top of the first to give the Aggies the 2-0 edge.
Freshman third baseman
Claudia Medina and junior right fielder
Tyler Thornton each drew a walk in the top of the second. Junior center fielder
Mazie Macfarlane doubled down the left field line to score Medina and Thornton and put USU up 4-0 midway through the second.
Utah State loaded the bases in the top of the fourth after Thornton walked, Macfarlane reached on a fielding error and sophomore left fielder
Libbie Hawker walked. Jimenez recorded an RBI to plate Thornton as Jimenez and Macfarlane got out on the play to put Hawker on second. Orozco then posted her second two-run bomb of the day with a shot to right field to give Utah State the 7-0 edge.
Freshman
Giselle Gonzalez led off in the top of the fifth as pinch hitter and was hit by a pitch. Junior catcher
Makenzie Macfarlane singled to left field in the next at-bat. The Aggies loaded the bases when Thornton drew her third walk of the day.
With two outs and bases loaded in the top of the fifth, senior
Emily Tidd came in as pinch hitter and record a three-RBI double to score Gonzalez,
Makenzie Macfarlane and Thornton. Hawker then came back in for Tidd and scored on a Jimenez double to give USU the 11-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the frame.
The Bulldogs had one runner get on base in the bottom of the fifth, but freshman pitcher
Mia Reynolds struck out back-to-back batters to end the game.
Reynolds pitched the complete game, striking out three Yale batters in her 5.0 innings of work.
Utah State next travels to Santa Clara and San Jose, California, to compete in the Silicon Valley Classic II from Friday, March 11, through Sunday, March 13.
