LOGAN, Utah — Utah State track & field will be represented by 11 athletes at the NCAA West Preliminaries in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Wednesday through Saturday, May 25-28.
Athletes who ranked among the top-48 in the East or West regions in their respective event earned berths to the NCAA Preliminary Championships. For each relay event, the top-24 declared relay teams also qualified for the East and West prelims.
Athletes with the top-12 times/marks and the 12 best relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Championships will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Finals, which are being held June 8-11, in Indianapolis, Indiana.
On the men's side, seniors
Caleb Garnica and
Connor Weaver will be competing in the 10,000 meters. Both Aggies put up their season-best performances in the event at the Stanford Invitational. Weaver finished with a time of 28:54.55, a time which ranks third all-time in the event at Utah State. Garnica ranks fourth all-time at USU in the 10,00 meters after registering a time of 28:58.24.
Senior
Mark Crandall and sophomore
Max Wehrli will also be taking part in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Wehrli and Crandall finished third and fourth, respectively, in the event at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships with times of 8:43.11 and 8:46.93. Wehrli and Crandall hold the third- and fifth-best times in the steeplechase in Aggie history.
Senior
Devin Pancake will also be heading to Arkansas to participate in the 1,500 meters. Pancake's recorded a season-best time of 3:43.30 at the Stanford-hosted Payton Jordan Invitational, also ranking as the third-best time in the event in program history.
For the Aggie women, senior
Katie Haviland and junior
Abby Jensen will also participate in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Haviland's season-best time came at the Mt. SAC Relays where she placed first overall with a time of 10:12.29, a mark which ranks second all-time at USU. Jensen, meanwhile, put up a career-best effort at the MW Outdoor Championships, placing fifth with a time of 10:15.68, moving her to third-best all-time at USU. Also in distance events, senior
Mica Rivera will compete in the 10,000 meters. Rivera posted a season-best time of 34:23.08 at the Stanford Invitational, a time which ranks second all-time at Utah State.
Sophomore
Olivia Smith will compete in the 400-meter hurdles after putting up the sixth-best time in the event by an Aggie at the conference championships. Smith placed fourth overall in the event with a time of 59.49.
Senior
Maia Garren will be competing in the women's shot put after putting up a career-best mark of 16.50 meters (54-1.75) at the MW Outdoor Championships. Garren's mark ranks third all-time at USU and trails second place by only 0.03 meters. Junior
Tori Bailey will also be competing in the discus. Bailey moved to second all-time in the discus at Utah State after placing third in the event at the MW Outdoor Championships with a mark of 53.68 meters (176-1).
