SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Utah State soccer lost, 1-0, at Utah on Sunday at Ute Field. Senior Diera Walton recorded three saves in the contest to move into a tie for second all-time in career saves at USU.
The two sides battled to a defensive draw over the first 45 minutes. Freshmen Kaylie Chambers and Tess Werts each recorded a shot on goal in the first half but USU was unable to find an opening goal.
Utah broke the deadlock in the 60th minute as Taliana Kaufusi snuck in a shot past Walton off a cross from Kelly Bullock. The Aggies generated several scoring chances in the remaining 30 minutes, narrowly missing an equalizer in the 78th minute off the foot of sophomore Tenzi Knowles which was saved by Utah's Evie Vitali. The Aggies were ultimately unable to find a tying goal before the horn sounded.
USU recorded five shots on goal in the match to Utah's four, though the Utes maintained a 12-10 advantage in total shots.
With another three saves in the match. Walton now has 249 saves in her career at Utah State, tying her for second place all-time alongside Michaela (Miller) Hawes. Walton now trails only Megan Mills' mark of 273 career saves at USU.
Utah State (2-2-3) faces another in-state foe in its next match as the Aggies return home to face BYU (3-2-2) on Thursday, September 15, at 5 p.m. (MT) at Chuck & Gloria Bell Field.
