LOGAN, Utah – Coming off its first Mountain West loss of the season, Utah State wasted little time getting back on track.
Much to the dismay of the injury-plagued Wyoming Cowboys.
Grad senior forward
Taylor Funk led all scorers in the game with a season-high-tying 22 points and fellow grad senior forward
Dan Akin recorded a double-double as the Aggies cruised to an 83-63 victory over the Cowboys on Tuesday night at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
Akin had 16 points and a season-high-tying 15 rebounds for Utah State (14-3, 3-1 MW), which bounced back from a 23-point road loss to Boise State last Saturday. Akin's five double-doubles this year leads the nation for bench players.
Hunter Maldonado scored 20 points for the Cowboys (5-11, 0-4 MW), who only dressed eight players. Wyoming has lost five straight.
Starting in place of the injured
Rylan Jones,
Steven Ashworth filled the stat sheet for the Aggies as the junior guard had eight points, seven assists, six rebounds and three steals.
Utah State, which got 14 points apiece from senior guard
Sean Bairstow and junior guard
Max Shulga, had nine more rebounds than Wyoming (43-34), 14 more assists (21-7) and 19 more bench points (23-4).
Jeremiah Oden chipped in 13 points for the Cowboys, who had won two straight against the Aggies coming into the contest. Ethan Anderson had Xavier DuSell each scored 10 for the visitors from Laramie.
Wyoming led just once on the night, 30 seconds into the contest after Oden hit a 3-pointer to make it 3-2. Utah State regained the lead for good at 6-3 when Funk nailed the first of his four 3-pointers on the night.
The nation's top 3-point field goal shooting team (42.8 percent prior to Tuesday) did not disappoint against the Cowboys as the Aggies shot 44.4 percent from beyond the arc (8-of-18). Overall, Utah State shot 50.8 percent from the field (31-of-61) and 86.7 percent from the free throw line (13-of-15).
Wyoming was held to just 39.1 percent shooting from the field (25-of-64), including 46.2 percent from 3-point range (6-of-13), and 41.2 percent from the charity stripe (7-of-17).
Utah State, up 40-26 at the break, led by as many as 25 in the second half.
