LOGAN, UTAH – Utah State senior guard
Ian Martinez has been named the America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete of the Week for the period ending on Sunday, Dec. 17. The award is voted on by a state-wide media panel.
With its sponsorship of the Student-Athlete of the Week, America First Credit Union donates funds directly to support student-athlete scholarships.
The native of Heredia, Costa Rica, led Utah State to a 2-0 record last week with an 84-82 win at Santa Clara and a 54-53 win against San Francisco in Salt Lake City.
Against the Broncos, Martinez led the Aggies with a career-best 28 points, while adding four rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block. He shot 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the field, 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from behind the arc and 80.0 percent (8-of-10) at the free throw line.
Against the Dons, he led the Aggies with 20 points, while adding a career-high eight rebounds and career-high-tying five steals. He shot 81.8 percent (9-of-11) at the charity stripe in the game.
For the week, Martinez averaged 24.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 steals, 1.0 assists and 0.5 blocks per game, while shooting 52.0 percent (13-of-25) from the field, 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from behind the arc and 81.0 percent (17-of-21) at the free throw line.
Utah State men's basketball wraps up nonconference play hosting East Tennessee State on Friday, Dec. 22, at 7 p.m.
