COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado — Utah State soccer (4-6-1, 1-1 MW) earned its first win of Mountain West play Sunday afternoon, posting a 2-1 win over Colorado College at Stewart Field in Colorado Springs.
The Aggies were able to set the tone early with a quick strike in the seventh minute, when sophomore forward
Tess Werts scored the second goal of her career and first of the season. Werts received a pass near midfield from sophomore midfielder
Kaylie Chambers near midfield before spinning and weaving between multiple Tiger defenders before chipping a shot over the keeper to make it a 1-0 USU advantage. This was Chambers' team-best third assist of the year.
Utah State remained the aggressor after the early goal, recording six shots in the first half to Colorado College's three. The Tigers were held without a shot on goal through the first 42 minutes of action.
The Aggies remained out front until the 62nd minute, when Colorado College's Brett Tsamasfyros slid into a well-placed pass in the box to tap the ball past USU graduate keeper
Diera Walton, but the tie was short-lived.
In the 75th minute, a well-executed play put the Aggies back in front. Senior defender
Kylie Olsen received the ball back after a throw-in in Tiger territory, before using a perfect cross into the box to find junior forward
Tenzi Knowles for a right-footed strike into the left corner of the net. This was the second goal of the season for Knowles, and the third of her career.
In total, Utah State out-shot Colorado College 12-6 on the afternoon, led by a pair of shots by Chambers and sophomore forward
Hannah Roe. Walton played the full match in net for USU, finishing with a save on two shots faced.
Utah State now returns home to Chuck and Gloria Bell Field for a pair of matches next week, beginning with Colorado State on Thursday, Sept. 28, at 5 p.m. The match will be streamed on Mountain West Network, with links to the live stream and stats available on utahstateaggies.com.
