LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men's basketball officially opened its 2023-24 season as USU held its first practice inside the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum on Monday. The Aggies, under the direction of first-year head coach
Danny Sprinkle, are made up of three returners and 13 newcomers and took part in conditioning and various drills during the initial practice.
"It was good," Sprinkle said. "The guys are competing and they're finally in a little bit of shape. It's nice to go longer than an hour and 10 minutes and actually feel like you're getting stuff. You can slow stuff down a little bit. You don't feel like you have to rush through that hour and 10 minutes. It was good and the guys responded well."
USU appeared in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, posting a 26-9 record last season while tying for second in the Mountain West with a 13-5 mark.
The Aggies return three players from the 2022-23 squad in sophomore guard
Landon Brenchley, redshirt sophomore center
Isaac Johnson and redshirt freshman guard
Mason Falslev.
Utah State welcomes 13 newcomers to the 2023-24 roster, including graduate senior guard
Darius Brown II, a Montana State transfer, graduate wing
Max Agbonkpolo, a Wyoming transfer, senior guard
Ian Martinez, a Maryland transfer, junior wing
Great Osobor, a Montana State transfer, junior guard
Josh Uduje, a Coastal Carolina transfer, junior forward
Jackson Grant, a Washington transfer, junior forward
Kalifa Sakho, a South Plains College transfer, sophomore guard
Javon Jackson, a Southern Nazarene transfer, sophomore forward
Nigel Burris, an Idaho transfer, and freshmen guard
Garrison Phelps, guard
Jaxon Smith, wing
Dallin Grant and forward
Karson Templin.
"It felt good," Falslev said. "We've been going hard since June, so it wasn't a huge switch up or anything. We were just out here a little bit longer. It was a good, solid day. We got better."
Aggie fans will get an early glimpse of the 2023-24 squad as USU hosts MSU Billings for an exhibition on Friday, Nov. 3. Utah State officially opens the campaign hosting South Dakota Mines on Monday, Nov. 6.
