LOGAN, Utah – The Mountain West Conference announced its preseason men's basketball all-conference teams and predicted order of finish Thursday morning, with Utah State graduate guard Ian Martinez earning a spot on the preseason all-MW team.
Martinez, a native of Heredia, Costa Rica, earned honorable mention all-Mountain West accolades in 2023-24 after ranking second on the team in scoring at 13.3 points per game, while also averaging 3.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists, and shooting an efficient 47.4 percent (143-for-302) from the floor and 38.1 percent (53-for-139) from 3-point range. Martinez scored in double-figures 22 times last season, including seven outings with 20-plus points.
As a team, Utah State was picked by the league's media to finish sixth in the preseason poll. The Aggies, who went 28-7 overall with a 14-4 mark in conference play last season, won the MW regular season title outright. USU has finished above its projected preseason projection in five of the past seven seasons. Utah State received 169 total points in the poll, including one first-place vote.
Boise State was picked to win the league, garnering 19 of a possible 26 first-place votes, followed by New Mexico and Nevada. San Diego State was picked fourth, with UNLV one spot ahead of USU at fifth. Colorado State was picked seventh and San José State eighth, while Wyoming, Fresno State and Air Force rounded out the poll in ninth, 10th and 11th, respectively.
