Utah State Soccer Earns Shutout in Road Draw with New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Utah State soccer (5-5-5, 2-1-3 MW) picked up a point and a shutout on the road Thursday night at UNM Soccer Complex in Albuquerque, playing 90 scoreless minutes against New Mexico in a 0-0 draw. 

The Aggie offense created opportunities throughout, recording 15 shots including five shots on frame, but were unable to find the back of the net. Senior forward Tess Werts led the Utah State attack with four shots in 69 minutes of action. Defensively, USU limited the Lobos to 11 shots with just two on frame, as graduate goalkeeper Taylor Rath was tasked with making just two saves while earning the shutout in net.

MATCH NOTES

  • This is the sixth shutout by the Utah State defense, and the third scoreless draw USU has played in this year. 

  • Utah State out-shot New Mexico 15-11, including a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.

  • Seven of USU's shots came in the first half, with eight in the second. 

  • Senior forward Tess Werts led Utah State with four shots, including one on goal. 

  • Nine different Utah State players recorded shots. Along with Werts, Summer Diamond, Rine Yonaha and Kunie Hirai each recorded multiple shots. 

  • Each side recorded three corner kicks. 

  • Taylor Rath played all 90 minutes in goal, making two saves to earn the shutout. 

  • Along with Rath, three other Aggies played all 90 minutes - Summer Sofonia, Kaeda Wilson and Capriel Winder

  • With the draw, Utah State is now 4-8-4 all-time against New Mexico, including a 2-4-2 record in Albuquerque. 

  • Utah State extends its unbeaten streak against the Lobos to four matches. 

 

UP NEXT
Utah State (5-5-5, 2-1-3 MW) will remain on the road this weekend as it travels to face San Diego State on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. (MT). The match will be streamed on Mountain West Network.

All seating at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field is general admission. Seating in the stadium bleachers is first come, first served. Fans are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for grass and berm seating.
