LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In a game that went down to the final possessions, Utah State women's basketball dropped a road contest at LMU on Friday night, 63-58. USU is now 3-4 on the season with the loss, while LMU improves to 4-3 with the victory.
In all, there were 13 lead changes and eight ties as LMU held a 15-14 advantage after the first quarter, followed by a 22-22 score at halftime and a 39-39 score heading into the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 53-53 with 2:43 remaining, LMU finished on a 10-5 run to post the five-point win.
Senior guard
Marina Asensio led Utah State with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting, including 2-of-7 from 3-point range, and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Junior guard
Aaliyah Gayles was the only other Aggie to score in double-figures as she finished with 12 points on 2-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-6 from 3-point range, and 6-of-9 at the free throw line.
Maya Hernandez led three Lions in double-figures with 15 points, while Jess Lawson notched a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Utah State shot 46.5 percent (20-of-43), including 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from 3-point range and 68.4 percent (13-of-19) at the free throw line. LMU shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56), including 27.3 percent (3-of-11) at the free throw line, and 50.0 percent (12-of-24) at the charity stripe.
The difference in the game was rebounding as LMU had a 36-24 advantage, including a 16-5 margin on the offensive glass, which led to a 13-0 advantage in second chance points. The Lions also had a 27-10 advantage in points off turnovers as USU gave it away 21 times as compared to 15 for LMU.
