PORTLAND, Ore. — Utah State soccer (3-4-2, 0-0-0 MW) fell on the road in its non-conference finale, losing to Portland 2-1 Saturday night at Portland's Clive Charles Soccer Complex.
Neither side found much offensive success early, Utah State tallying just three shots in the first 45 minutes while Portland had just two. It was the Pilots who struck first, however, capitalizing on what was their second shot of the game when a late deflected header in the box ricocheted off the post and into the back of the net in the 39th minute.
The Aggies evened the score at 1-1 in the 54th minute when freshman midfield/forward Hadli Barrera got in the way of a Portland pass, knocking it to the feet of senior forward Kaylie Chambers. A couple of touches later, Chambers tapped the ball back to Barrera, who netted her second goal in as many games.
The score remained even until the 62nd minute, when Portland pulled ahead once again, this time on a set piece. A corner kick which took several bounces in the box eventually resulted in a right-footer into the net.
