NEW HOME UNIFORMS/NEW LOOK HELMETS/HELMET STICKERS -- When the Utah State football team takes to the turf of newly named Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium on Saturday for its home opener against Idaho State, the Aggies will be donning new home uniforms. Head coach Gary Andersen and selected players helped choose the design for the jerseys. The jerseys and pants are made by Nike and feature a navy blue base with white letters and numbers with black piping around the numbers along with white and black trim on the sides of the jerseys and pants. USU will be able to wear the navy blue jersey with either navy blue or white pants for home games and the white jersey with either white or navy blue pants for road games. Utah State's helmets got an new look this summer, as the white helmet with larger navy blue metallic paint flakes is an upgrade from the white helmet with small black metallic flakes last year, while the navy blue facemasks replace white masks that have adorned the white helmet with U-State logo since the mid-90's. Additionally, helmet stickers will be awarded to players, with a "Block A" for academic achievement and community service and a bull head for athletic recognition. All helmets will also have a "71" sticker on the back, honoring USU legend Merlin Olsen, who passed away March 11, 2010.

UTAH STATE NAMES FIELD AT ROMNEY STADIUM 'MERLIN OLSEN FIELD -- To honor one of its greatest alumnus and the most decorated football player in school history, Utah State University is naming the playing field inside Romney Stadium `Merlin Olsen Field.'

An official dedication ceremony will take place during the end of the 2010 football season in conjunction with the 50th anniversary of Utah State's 1960 Sun Bowl Team, led by Olsen. During the official dedication of Merlin Olsen Field at Romney Stadium, a larger-than-life-size bronze statue of Olsen, which will be sculpted by nationally renowned artist Blair Buswell, will be unveiled in the southeast corner of the stadium.

Olsen was a three-year lettermen on the offensive and defensive lines for Utah State's football team from 1959-61, earning All-American honors during both his junior and senior seasons. During his senior season in 1961, he won the Outland Trophy as the nation's outstanding interior defensive lineman.

Olsen also was a three-time academic All-American at Utah State and graduated Summa Cum Laude and Phi Kappa Phi in 1962 with a degree in finance.

NFL Hall of Famer Merlin Olsen, the greatest athlete in Utah State University history, passed away at City of Hope Hospital near Los Angeles on March 11, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer.

This is the second time in the last 14 home-openers that Idaho State has been the home-opening opponent, as the Aggies also hosted the Bengals in their first home contest of the 1997 season, winning 41-7... The Sept. 11 date is USU's earliest home-opener since 2007 when the Aggies' first home game was on Aug. 30... Here is a look at USU's last 20 home openers:

If history is on the side of the Aggies, their score will have a four in it, while the Bengals have been shutout in the first two of those meetings and scoring just seven points in each of the last two meetings... Overall, the average score in those four meetings in USU's home-openers is 54-3, but just 27-7 in the two meetings since 1980, as the Aggies' school-record point outburst and scoring margin record of 136-0 is part of that stretch. 1919 - W 136-0 1932 - W 32-0 1946 - W 47-0 1980 - W 14-7 1997 - W 41-7 FCS OPENER -- Saturday marks just the fourth time in the last 14 years that USU has hosted an FCS foe in the Aggies' home-opener, joining 2000, 1999, 1997, although it was supposed to five as USU was scheduled to host Nicholls State in 2005, but that game was cancelled due to Hurricane Katrina.

Overall, USU is 76-17-6 vs. FCS opponents, winning the last four in a row, after getting upset by Idaho State, 27-24, on Nov. 18, 2000... Ironically, that is Idaho State's last win against a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) team... With 15 meetings, Idaho State is the Aggies' third-most faced FCS foe behind the 34 meetings with Montana State (22-6-6) and 32 meetings with Montana (25-7)... USU IN SEPTEMBER / ON SEPT. 11 -- Utah State has lost 15 of its last 17 games in calendar's ninth month... USU is 8-29 during September in the 2000's... UTAH STATE-IDAHO STATE SERIES -- Utah State is 11-2 all-time against Idaho State, last facing each other in 2002... The Aggies are 10-1 against the Bengals in games played at Logan, 2-1 in Pocatello, and 1-0 on foreign soil, as the two neighboring state schools didn't think they were close enough to play so they went to Osaka, Japan in 1978, with USU winning, 10-0... BOREL EARNS NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR SATURDAY'S PERFORMANCE -- Utah State senior quarterback Diondre Borel earned national recognition for his performance Saturday night in the Aggies' near-upset of No. 7 Oklahoma before falling, 31-24, by receiving a helmet sticker from ESPN.com. He is the lone Western Athletic Conference player to earn a helmet sticker among the non-BCS conferences list.

Borel was 17-of-36 for 341 yards (20.1 yards per completion) with two touchdowns. It was Borel's sixth career 300-yard passing outing, his 17th career game with at least one TD pass and ninth career game with multi-TDs and Borel now has 30 career TD passes.

Borel was joined on the list by Troy kicker Michael Taylor, the TCU rushing offense, Houston quarterback Case Keenum and Utah safety Brian Blechen.

ABOUT IDAHO STATE -- The Bengals bring a 1-0 record into Saturday's game, after Idaho State beat Montana Western, 32-3, on Saturday in ISU's home opener. Redshirt freshman back-up quarterback Kyle Morris passed for 189 yards and three touchdowns, while transfer running backs Corey White and Jahmel Rover teamed up for 234 rushing yards.

The victory marked the first time ISU held an opponent without a touchdown since the last time the Bengals played the Bulldogs, a 37-0 win in 2005 at home. Montana Western gained only 141 yards, minus-three on 21 rushes. ISU rushed for 269 yards and passed for 189 for a total of 458 yards in 34:45 of possession.

Morris completed 17-of-26 passes for 189 yards with three TD's and one interception. He opened the game's scoring by hitting sophomore wide receiver Rodrick Rumble with a short toss that Rumble converted into a 49-yard TD. It was the game's first play from scrimmage and followed a 44-yard kickoff return by transfer all-purpose back Tavoy Moore.

Moore totaled 203 yards of all purpose running, 32 on three rushes, 40 on three pass receptions, 78 on two kickoff returns, and 53 on two punt returns.

Defensively, the Bengals were led by senior CB Kenny Viser with seven tackles, including one for loss and adding one pass break-up. Junior DT Jordan Monga added six stops, three for loss.

ABOUT UTAH STATE -- Utah State matched seventh-ranked Oklahoma punch for punch, before falling 31-24, Saturday at OU's Owen Field at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

USU out-gained OU in total offense, 421-412. The Aggies had 341 passing and 80 rushing. Senior quarterback Diondre Borel was 17-of-37 passing for the 341 yards with two TD passes, but was also intercepted three times.

Junior Xavier Watkins and sophomore Dontel Watkins both caught their first career TD catches as Aggies, as Martin finished with four catches for 60 yards and Watkins had three receptions for 91 yards. Sophomore Mikhail Morgan had four catches for 44 yards.

Senior running back Michael Smith had eight carries for 48 yards with one TD, while fellow senior Derrvin Speight added 17 rushes for 46 yards.

Junior linebacker Kyle Gallagher led the Aggies with a game-high 11 tackles, while senior linebacker Bobby Wagner posted eight stops. Senior cornerback Chris Randle added seven tackles to go with one interception. Junior linebacker Junior Keiaho also snared his first career interception of the game.

Senior punter and placekicker Peter Caldwell hit a 40-yard field goal and just missed a 50-yarder that just drifted wide left. Caldwell punted seven times for a 47.7 yards per punt average with a long of 58-yards.

OU jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring on the opening possession of the game, and its last of the quarter. A 12-yard pass from Jones to Broyles opened the scoring and a 1-yard run by Murray capped the opening period scoring.

The Sooners opened a 21-0 advantage with 6:21 on the second-stanza clock on another Jones to Broyles TD pass play, this time from 21-yards out.

Utah State, which moved the ball down the field, but just couldn't get in scoring range, broke through late in the second quarter. On fourth-and-six from the OU 18-yard line, the Aggies ran a fake field goal with junior holder Eric Moats hitting junior tight end Kellen Bartlett with a TD pass, but was disallowed by an ineligible receiver penalty. Senior placekicker Peter Caldwell booted a 40-yard field goal to put the Aggies on the board. The USU defense forced its fourth three-and-out of the half, getting the ball back for the Aggie offense. Borel spearheaded the attack which started with 34-yard pass to Watkins and ended when senior running back Michael Smith scored on a 4-yard run out of the Wild Aggie formation, putting USU down 21-10 at half.

Utah State pulled within 21-17 on its second possession of the third quarter, as Borel hit Watkins for a 42-yard catch and run for a TD with 10:16 to play in the third. It was Watkins' first career TD catch as an Aggie. The close gap didn't last long as OU's ensuing possession ended with a Murray 63-yard scamper down the sideline put the Sooners up 28-17.

After OU added a 32-yard field goal by Patrick O'Hara, the Aggies marched down the field, capping the drive with a 31-yard TD pass from Borel to junior wideout Xavier Martin for Martin's first USU career TD and closing the margin to 31-24 with 2:31 left in the third quarter.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter, trading punts and interceptions, the last by OU at the Aggie 41 with 4:12 on the clock, thwarting USU's comeback rally. The Sooners ran out the clock to end the game and escape the Aggies' upset.

PERSONNEL BREAKDOWN -- FROM NEAR AND FAR -- USU's roster consists of players from 15 different states and from two countries in the United States and Canada. The states represented on the Aggies' roster are Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Washington.

VETERAN EXPERIENCE -- The Aggies have 22 seniors in 2010. Of the 22, 11 are at least two-year letterwinners, including seven who are three-year lettermen, in QB Diondre Borel, OL Spencer Johnson, CB Curtis Marsh, CB Chris Randle, DT Nathan Royster, P/PK Peter Caldwell and LS Patrick Scales.

THE TALL OF IT -- USU has six players who are 6'5" or taller, 6'8" freshman OL Bryce Walker, 6'7" senior OL Spencer Johnson, 6'7" junior TE Tarren Lloyd, 6'6" junior OL Tanner Richins, 6'5" sophomore OL Brooks Abel and 6'5" sophomore OL Oscar Molina-Sanchez.

THE SHORT OF IT -- Junior running back Josh Flores is the shortest player on Utah State's 2010 roster at 5'5"... Overall, Flores is one of 15 players on the Aggies' roster under 5'10" tall.

SMART AGGIES -- Utah State had 15 academic all-WAC selections for football, part of USU's 41 fall academic all-conference honors, which was second in the WAC... Overall, USU had 194 student-athletes recognized by the league office for academic achievements during the 2009-10 academic year, as Utah State has led the WAC in academic all-conference honors all five years that it has been in the league.

ROAD BOOK-ENDS -- Utah State will open and close the regular-season on the road for the second-straight season, kicking off the season at Oklahoma on Sept. 4 and playing its regular-season finale at Boise State on Dec. 4... Last year USU opened at Utah and closed at Idaho... The last time that the Aggies book-ended the season's schedule with home games was 1998 when they hosted Utah in the season-opener and hosted North Texas in the finale.

NO WILLIE -- USU will not hear Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again" this season as the Aggies do not have consecutive road games on the 2010 schedule, marking only the third time that has happened in the last 100 years, joining the 1920 and 2005 ledgers.

NAME GAME -- USU could form its own legal company of `Johnson, Johnson and Johnson' for the medical company of Johnson & Johnson, as the Aggies have three players with the last name of Johnson on their 2010 roster and even though all three are from California, none of them are related: senior OL Spencer Johnson (Lancaster), senior DL Devin Johnson (Glendora) and freshman WR Shaan Johnson (Cerritos).

UTAH STATE'S Diondre Borel TABBED TO MANNING AWARD WATCH LIST -- Utah State senior quarterback Diondre Borel was announced as a member of the Manning Award Watch List on Saturday, as he is the fifth player named by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in its daily release of honorees.

The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor of the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that takes into consideration the candidates' bowl performances. Ten finalists will be selected in late-November and the winner will be announced after the bowls in January and will be honored at a ceremony in New Orleans.

The award, sponsored by the Allstate Sugar Bowl, will release one name each day from mid-July through early August, on its website, allstatesugarbowl.org/ManningAward and via facebook and twitter. Votes will be tabulated following the completion of every bowl game in January.

Borel, a native of Oakley, Calif. (Freedom HS), enters his senior season with hopes of continuing last season's breakout and record-setting year and continue his ascent up the USU record books. He also enters his senior season with six school records in his pocket, as he is the USU record holder for single-season total offense (3,343 yards, 2009), single-season rushing yards by a QB (632 in 2008), career rushing yards for a QB (1,098 yards, 2007-pres.), single-season fewest interceptions thrown (four in 2009), consecutive passes without an interception (228 in 2009) and single-game passing yards per completion (21.1 on 316 yards on 15 completions vs. Southern Utah, 2009).

Last season, Borel led the WAC and ranked 15th in the FBS in total offense at 278.6 ypg, setting the USU record for single-season total offense with 3,343 yards. Borel was also third in the conference in passing average per game (204.4 ypg) as well as fifth in the league and 35th in the nation in passing efficiency (137.83). Additionally, Borel set the school record for fewest interceptions thrown with four, a mark that tied for second-fewest in FBS. Last season, he threw for 2,885 yards on 214-of-366 passing and threw 17 TD passes on the year.

Borel's 3,343 yards of total offense last year is a USU single-season record, topping the previous mark of 3,260 yards by Anthony Calvillo in 1993. Entering this season with 21 consecutive starts, Borel is ranked sixth in school history for career total offense (5,690 yards), needing 3,101 to reach the No. 1 mark of 8.791 yards by Jose Fuentes from 1999-2002.

The preseason Watch List recognizes some of the top quarterbacks in the nation based on previous collegiate performance, however, every quarterback in the nation remains eligible for the honor. Additional quarterbacks may be added to the Watch List after the start of the season. The list of 10 finalists will be released on Monday, Nov. 29. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, Jan. 19.

The winner is selected by a panel of national media covering college football, as well as each of the Mannings. Past winners of the award include Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow, Matt Ryan, JaMarcus Russell, Vince Young and Matt Leinart.

USU's Peter Caldwell NAMED TO PRESEASON RAY GUY AWARD WATCH LIST -- Utah State senior punter Peter Caldwell was named to the Preseason Ray Guy Award, which identifies the nation's top collegiate punter, announced Wednesday by the Augusta Sports Council.

Caldwell, a Kaysville, Utah (Davis HS), native, is one of seven players on the preseason list, joining Drew Butler from Georgia, Ryan Donahue from Iowa, Johnny Hekker from Oregon State, Chas Henry from Florida, Jeff Locke from UCLA and Rob Long from Syracuse. All seven are returning Ray Guy Award semi-finalists from 2009.

In 2009, Caldwell led the WAC and ranked 37th in Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in punting with a 42.2 yards per punt average with 69 punts for 2,914 yards. Caldwell had 17 punts of 50+ yards, highlighted by a season and career long 62-yarder. He tallied 27 punts inside the 20-yard line and forced the opposition's returner to call for a fair catch on 16 punts.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN -- Utah State football head coach Gary Andersen announced the six Aggie captains for the 2010 season, after a vote by the team.

Five of the six are seniors, as offensive captains will be senior quarterback Diondre Borel, senior offensive lineman Spencer Johnson and senior running back Michael Smith. Captaining the defense will be senior defensive lineman Sean Enesi, senior cornerback Chris Randle and junior linebacker Bobby Wagner.

HEAD COACH COACHING POSITION -- In addition to his head coaching duties, USU head coach Gary Andersen is also the position coach for the defensive tackles... Andersen is one of 12 Division I (FBS) coaches doing so, and one of nine non-special teams related position:

Arkansas State Steve Roberts Special TeamsBall State Stan Parrish QuarterbacksBYU Bronco Mendenhall Defensive TacklesUConn Randy Edsall SafetiesKent State Doug Martin QuarterbacksLouisiana Rickey Bustle PK, LS and PRLouisiana-Monroe Todd Berry Quarterbacks Nevada Chris Ault QuarterbacksSan Diego State Brady Hoke Defensive LineTulsa Todd Graham SafetiesUTAH STATE Gary Andersen Defensive TacklesVirginia Tech Frank Beamer Kickers
FOOTBALL ISN'T JUST AMERICA'S GAME -- USU has four players who were born internationally... Senior LB Jerome Barbour (Germany), senior OL Tariq Polley (England), sophomore WR Emmanual Ojeriakhi (Nigeria) and freshman LB Connor Williams (Canada) all were born outside of the United States.

TRANSFER-MERS -- USU has 21 junior college transfers, as well as nine players who transferred from another four-year school on the 2010 roster... Three players on the roster came to USU from Snow College: senior DT Casey Davis, senior LB Joey Schrader, junior LB Gavin Jones... Three were teammates at El Camino JC: senior DT's Sean Enesi and Kamaloni Vainikola and junior LB Reuben Willis... Two were teammates at Grossmont JC: junior WR Xavier Martin and sophomore RB Joey DeMartino.

112 / 118 -- USU is taking the field for the 112th season of football in 118 years... The Aggies beat Utah, 12-0, in 1892, but then did not field a team until 1896, when they again only played one game but then played every year since with the exceptions of 1918 when to World War I and influenza cancelled the season and 1943 due to World War II.
