Sept. 13, 2015 LOGAN, Utah - Two weeks into the college football season and Utah State's defense ranks among the top-40 in the nation in seven different categories, including second in the Mountain West and 15th nationally in total defense (245.0 ypg).
Overall, the Aggies rank in the top-40 nationally in nine different categories.
Utah State also ranks second in the MW and 13th in the nation in passing defense (121.5 ypg), second in the MW and 37th in the nation in scoring defense (16.5 ppg), fourth in the MW and 46th in the nation in rushing defense (123.5 ypg), fifth in the MW and 33rd in the nation in passing efficiency defense (103.1), and seventh in the MW and 38th nationally in sacks per game (52.5).
The Aggies' defense has allowed just seven third-down conversions on 32 attempts (.219) this year to lead the Mountain West and rank 15th nationally. Utah State has also only allowed 30 first downs through two games, which ranks third in the MW and 28th nationally.
Utah State has forced at least one turnover in 34 of its last 39 games, including 30 turnovers last season with 19 interceptions and 11 fumble recoveries. In all, the Aggies have forced 77 turnovers in its last 39 games. USU has intercepted 36 passes in its last 26 games, including multiple interceptions in 12 of those 26 games, and has at least one interception in 16 of its last 22 games.
The Aggies scored five defensive touchdowns last season and have scored eight defensive touchdowns in their last 24 games.
Offensively, Utah State ranks tied for fourth in the MW and tied for 46th in the nation in sacks allowed per game (1.5), fifth in the MW in completion percentage (.559) and sixth in passing offense (183.0 ypg).
On special teams, the Aggies rank third in the MW and 29th nationally in punt return average (14.6 ypr), and sixth in the MW and 26th nationally in kickoff return defense (17.00 ypr).
Individually, junior LB Nick Vigil ranks first in the MW and fifth nationally in tackles (12.5 pg), and is tied for fifth in the MW and tied for 61st nationally in tackles for loss (1.5 pg).
Redshirt junior WR Andrew Rodriguez ranks first in the MW and 19th in the nation in punt returns (17.0 ypr). Senior LB Kyler Fackrell ranks tied for second in the MW and tied for 24th nationally in sacks (1.0 pg), and tied for 34th in the MW in tackles (5.5 pg).
Sophomore CB Jalen Davis ranks tied for third in the MW and tied for ninth nationally in passes defended (2.0 pg), while redshirt senior QB Chuckie Keeton ranks third in the MW and 75th in the nation in total offense (209.5 ypg), and third in the MW and 76th nationally in passing (183.0 ypg).
Senior WR Devonte Robinson ranks fourth in the MW and 67th in the nation in receiving (74.0 ypg), and seventh in the MW in receptions (4.5 pg), while senior LB LT Filiaga ranks fifth in the MW and 63rd nationally in tackles (9.0 pg), and senior NG David Moala ranks tied for 34th in the MW in tackles (5.5 pg).
Furthermore, junior FS Devin Centers ranks tied for 44th in the MW in tackles (5.0 pg) and redshirt freshman P Aaron Dalton ranks ninth in the MW and 73rd nationally in punting (37.3 ypk).
Utah State returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 19, when it hits the road for the second consecutive week against a Pac-12 opponent, facing Washington (1-1) at Husky Stadium in Seattle. The game kicks off at 3 p.m. and will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
