WHAT'S ON TAP: Utah State gymnastics (3-2) heads to the Sooner State for the Oklahoma-hosted Perfect 10 Challenge on Friday, Feb. 12. Joining the No. 1 Sooners and Aggies are 12th-ranked Denver and 17th-ranked George Washington. The quad-meet is being held at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Okla., and is slated to begin at 5:45 p.m. (MT).
TUNING IN: Friday's meet will be televised live on Fox Sports Southwest and Fox College Sports Central. It will also be streamed through the Fox Sports GO App (an affiliated cable subscription is required). THE RANKINGS: Utah State enters Saturday's quad-meet ranked 30th nationally and sixth in the North Central Region with an average team score of 194.760. As a team, the Aggies rank 21st nationally on bars (48.830), 26th on beam (48.695), 36th on floor (48.705) and 38th on vault (48.530).
Oklahoma is the top-ranked team in the nation with an average score of 197.393. As a team, the Sooners rank first nationally on bars (49.386), first on beam (49.321), second on vault (49.336) and third on floor (49.350).
Denver is ranked 12th in the nation with an average team score of 195.495. As a team, the Pioneers rank eighth nationally on floor (49.125), 13th on both vault (49.020) and bars (49.075), and 21st on beam (48.725).
George Washington is ranked 17th in the nation with an average team score of 195.656. The Colonials rank 13th nationally on beam (48.931), 17th on bars (48.988), 21st on floor (48.963) and 26th on vault (48.775).
SOONER BORN: Junior Katie Brown is the lone gymnast on Utah State's roster from the Sooner State as she is from Norman. Brown graduated first in her class from Norman North High School, where she was president of the National Honor Society. She spent her club career at the Bart Connor Gymnastics Academy.
LAST TIME OUT: Despite a season-high road score, the Utah State gymnastics team fell to then-No. 13 Denver 196.675-195.00 last Saturday night at Hamilton Gymnasiusm in Denver, Colo.
The Aggies excelled on floor for the second consecutive week, recording a season-high 49.075, but it still wasn't enough to overcome the Pioneers (6-0) and Nina McGee.
McGee, a senior and two-time All-American, placed first in the all-around for the fifth time this season, recording a 39.600. She had a 9.850 on vault to tie for first, a 9.925 on bars to win the event, a 9.875 on beam to tie for first and a 9.950 on floor to win that event, as well.
Junior Bailey McIntire placed second in the all-around for the Aggies as the junior finished with a 38.450. Prior to the meet, a Utah State gymnast had won the all-around title in all four meets of the season. Furthermore, the Aggies did not win an event title for the first time this season.
WELCOME BACK: Junior Katie Brown, who redshirted in 2015 due to a knee injury, competed in her first meet of the season for the Aggies and had a 9.750 on vault last Saturday night against Denver.
IN THE BOOKS: Freshman Natalie Rainbolt saw her first action as a collegiate gymnast against Denver last Saturday night. In her debut on beam, Rainbolt posted a score of 9.800 to finish tied for sixth in the event.
CAREER HIGHS: In last Saturday's meet against Denver, seven Utah State gymnasts either set or tied career-high marks. Freshman Madison Ward had a career-high 9.800 on bars and tied her career high on vault with a 9.750. Senior Michelle Yasukochi tied her career high of 9.825 on vault to place third in the event. In the third rotation on floor, senior McKinzey Martinez led the way with a career-best-tying 9.875 to tie for second in the event, while senior Jillian Chappel and sophomore Keri Peel matched their top scores with a 9.800 and 9.750, respectively. Closing the meet on beam, Utah State was led by sophomore Melanie Oster, who tied her career-high score of 9.850. Freshman Natalie Rainbolt made her collegiate debut on the event and notched a 9.800.
WINNER WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER: USU has had seven different gymnasts earn event wins this season, collecting 13 event titles overall. Senior McKinzey Martinez leads the team with four event wins, while juniors Charly Belliston, Bailey McIntire and Hayley Sanzotti have each recorded two wins. Senior Jillian Chappel, sophomore Melanie Oster and freshman Emily Briones have captured one event title apiece.
UP NEXT: Utah State will remain on the road and travel south down I-15 to take on Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference rival BYU on Friday, Feb. 19. The meet, which will be held at the Smith Fieldhouse, is slated to being at 7 p.m. (MT).
