June 10, 2016 LOGAN, Utah - The Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference announced its academic all-conference honorees Friday afternoon and 10 Utah State student-athletes were named to the list.
The Aggies recorded the third-most honorees in the conference, trailing both Boise State (15) and Southern Utah (12). BYU rounded out the four-team league with nine gymnasts being recognized.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must have a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average for the 2015-16 school year and have appeared on the squad list during the 2016 campaign.
"My congratulations to all the student-athletes and MRGC member institution programs for their classroom achievements," said Dr. Brian Evans, Chairman of the MRGC Board of Directors. "The academic accomplishments of these young women, in tandem with each program's national ranking, is a remarkable feat."
The 10 Utah State gymnasts to receive MRGC recognition include seniors Jillian Chappel, Miranda Kerr, McKinzey Martinez and Michelle Yasukochi; juniors Katie Brown, Bailey McIntire and Hayley Sanzotti; and freshmen Emily Briones, Natalie Rainbolt and Madison Ward.
The Aggies concluded the 2016 season by placing fifth at the NCAA Regional Championships with a team score of 195.025. Seeded sixth in the competition, Utah State finished ahead of MRGC-rival Southern Utah, which scored a 194.950.
Prior to the NCAA Regional Championships, the Aggies competed at the MRGC Championships and placed fourth with a team score of 195.875. Utah State finished third on vault (48.925), third on bars (49.025), third on beam (49.000) and fourth on floor (48.925).
McIntire earned first-team all-MRGC honors in the all-around (39.425), bars (9.900) and beam (9.850), to go along with a second-team accolade on vault (9.825).
Chappel earned second-team all-MRGC honors on vault (9.825), while Sanzotti garnered second-team honors on beam (9.825).
