CEDAR CITY, Utah -
Utah State 13, Wagner 4 (5)
| Utah State 7, Bradley 5
Utah State softball continues to see success in southern Utah, as the Aggies added two wins at the Beehive Classic Friday. USU opened the day in a 13-4 five-inning win over Wagner before defeating Bradley, 7-5.
Against Wagner, junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke and senior first baseman Paxton Provost led the team, as both went 3-of-4 at the plate. Clarke hit a triple, while Provost had one of three USU home runs in the game. Sophomore pitcher Katie Schroeder threw the complete game against the Seahawks, allowing nine hits while striking out one batter and walking one other.
"It was another good day. We played really well in the first game," said USU head coach Steve Johnson. "Despite letting them score first, we answered back and kept the hammer down all game. We executed well all throughout the game."
Later, against Bradley, senior designated player Sydney Hart was tops at the plate, as she went 3-for-3. Senior April Brown pitched the majority of the game, earning the win with 6.2 innings pitched. She was relieved by freshman Kellie White for the final two outs, where she picked up her second save of the season.
"In game two, we didn't have it right away, but we kept it close until we could get our bats going," Johnson said. "It wasn't a pretty win, but it counts just the same. You're going to have some of those, but we need to come out firing early on."
With the wins, Utah State sits at 15-4 on the season.
Wagner struck first in the early game of the day with two runs in the top of the first. Utah State answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning though, and never looked back. Clarke led-off with a bunt single, quickly stealing second. She advanced to third on a groundout, scoring on a double from senior second baseman Victoria Sauced. Saucedo scored her first run of the day on the next at-bat, when Provost hit a deep single to center field.
The Aggies went on to score a total of six unanswered runs through the first three innings. With the second hit of her career, freshman catcher Allanah Alvarado had the Aggies' first home run, as she blasted the ball over the left field fence. Sophomore outfielder Mia Maher followed with a bunt single and a stolen base, before scoring on Clarke's triple. Clark later crossed the plate on a single from junior third baseman Amee Aarhus. Aarhus added a stolen base and advanced to third before the inning ended. In the fourth inning, senior shortstop Sarina Jaramillo led-off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. A sac fly from junior designated player Brina Buttacavoli then drove her home to extend USU's lead.
Wagner was able to get back in the scoring column in the top of the fourth inning, with a two-run home run to left center. The Aggies answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Provost was first on-base with a single, but was out on a fielder's choice off Jaramillo's bat. Freshman outfielder Riley Plogger followed with a single, but both runners advanced on a fielding error by the Seahawks. Jaramillo scored on that play. Buttacavoli followed with a double down the left side to score Plogger.
Wagner got one last hit on the day, but the game came to an early end when Utah State added five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Clarke again opened the inning with a bunt single, stealing second. She crossed the plate as Aarhus singled up the middle. Aarhus then added the team's sixth stolen base of the game and advanced to third on a fly out. Provost hit a home run to right field, bringing Aarhus home. Jaramillo then followed with a double, before Plogger added her first-career home run to end the game.
Against the Seahawks, Utah State tallied a season-high 17 hits, while allowing nine. Wagner committed two errors in the game.
The Aggies returned to the field after a quick break to take on Bradley.
Utah State didn't have the start it hoped for against the Braves, as Bradley scored the first two runs of the game over the first three innings. Bradley struck in the bottom of the first as three hits combined with an Aggie error to put one run on the board. However, the USU defense held the Braves to just the one while putting a second runner out at the plate. Bradley later opened the third inning with a home run to right field.
USU answered Bradley's scoring in the top of the fourth. Jaramillo reached on a error at shortstop and advanced to second on a groundout. Buttacavoli followed with a single up the middle to push Jaramillo home and put the Aggies on the board. Hart followed with a single, while both runners advanced on a groundout from Maher. Clarke then hit her second triple of the day to bring Buttacavoli and Hart across the plate and give Utah State the lead.
The Aggies' surge continued through the next two innings, scoring a total of seven unanswered runs. Saucedo scored on a double from Provost in the top of the fifth. Hart opened the sixth with a double, while senior Kylie-Rose Dickson entered to pinch run for her. Dickson and Clarke both scored when Aarhus singled and all runners advanced on an error. Aarhus then crossed the plate on another Bradley error.
The Braves tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs. The defense held, however, securing the win.
Utah State tallied 12 hits against Bradley, while the Braves had 10. Bradley had four errors on the day to USU's one.
Utah State continues Beehive Classic action with a single game against Wagner on Saturday, March 11, at 12:30 p.m. Tournament play will conclude on Sunday, March 12 at 10 a.m. against Bradley.
