SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Utah State men's tennis (2-1) lost 4-3 to Utah (3-0) in Salt Lake City on Sunday.

"Tough match for us today," head coach James Wilson said. "We competed hard in doubles and were literally one point away from winning the point. Overall in singles, we didn't have everyone and that's disappointing. We have to push forward and continue to improve."

Senior Andrew Nakajima and freshman Valdemar Holm lost, 6-4, in doubles at the No. 2 spot against freshmen Randy Cory and Russell Benkaim. Senior Jaime Barajas and freshman Jose Carvajal then took a 7-5 victory over juniors Joe Woolley and Dan Little at the No. 1 spot. The doubles point came down to the No. 3 spot where junior Samuel Serrano and sophomore Sergiu Bucur lost, 7-5, to senior Egbert Weverink and junior David Micevski.

In singles play, Barajas took on Little, who is ranked No. 92 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, at the No. 1 spot, losing 6-4, 6-3. Serrano finished next at the No. 2 spot, losing 6-2, 6-2 to Micevski. Freshman Addy Vashistha lost, 6-4, 6-1, at the No. 6 spot to senior Santiago Sierra.

Holm got the first point for the Aggies with a 7-5, 7-6 victory at the No. 5 spot against Cory. Carvajal finished shortly after, winning 6-3, 7-6 against Weverink at the No. 4 spot. Bucur closed out the match with a 7-5, 4-6, 13-11 victory over sophomore Slava Shainyan at the No. 3 spot.

Utah State men's tennis continues its 2018 dual match season at the ITA Kick-off Weekend in Los Angeles, Calif. The Aggies will first take on UCF on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (MT), before competing in another match on Sunday.
