UW Invitational Results
SEATTLE, Wash. - Utah State's track & field teams collected one event title and four top-three finishes at the Washington-hosted UW Invitational this weekend, highlighted by senior distance runner Cierra Simmons-Mecham's school-record effort in both the 3,000 meters and distance medley relay.
Simmons-Mecham broke her previous school mark in the 3,000, this time recording a time of 9:23.86 to take fifth in the event. She also teamed with senior Megan Ryan, junior Melanie Muncy and sophomore Karen Christensen in the distance medley relay, where they recorded a program indoor record time of 11:37.89, finishing 10th overall amongst some of the top distance programs in the country. In fact, four of the squads recorded times that bested the meet record in the event. The other quartet of Hannah Davidson, Alexis Koetitz, Shannon Maloney and Mica Rivera finished 20th with a time of 12:02.39 in the DMR.
The men's 5,000 meters also saw a pair of Aggies place their names on the all-time indoor program list as junior Luke Beattie's fourth-place time of 14:08.78 and senior James Withers' ninth-place time of 14:19.61 put them third and fourth on the indoor program list, respectively. Junior J.D. Thorne and sophomore Coen Haroldsen also recorded personal-best times in the 5,000 as Thorne ran it in 14:39.31, while Haroldsen finished in 14:50.21.
Senior Leaugen Fray was the lone Aggie to capture an event title as he won the high jump with a leap of 2.08 meters (6-09.75), while freshman Chandler Obray finished two spots behind him for third place with a leap of 2.03 meters (6-08.00).
The Aggies also found success in the weight throw, as junior Maia Garren placed fifth with a heave of 17.78 meters (58-04.00), good enough to move her to fifth on the all-time indoor program record. Garren also placed fourth in the shot put with a toss of 14.93 meters (48-11.75).
However, senior Brenn Flint out-tossed Garren with a heave of 15.94 meters (52-03.75), good enough for second place. Also in the shot put was junior Kyle Morris, who tossed a personal-best mark of 16.62 meters (54-06.50), good enough for second place.
Others to get personal bests in their events were sophomore Josh Barclay in the weight throw (15.53 meters/50-11.50) and shot put (17.41 meters/57-01.50), sophomore Bailee Parker in the 5,000 (17:09.05) and redshirt junior Jensen Mosman in the 400 (57.75).
Sophomore Talie Bonds amassed 3,683 points in the pentathlon, and also recorded a personal-best leap of 5.50 meters (18-00.50) in the long jump, while senior Alyssa Hirschi-Swenson earned 3,565 points, including a personal-best run of 9.09 in the 60-meter hurdles.
Utah State is back in action on Feb. 1-2, when it competes at the two-day Boise State-hosted Jacksons/Nike Boise Indoor Invitational in Nampa, Idaho.
