SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Four Aggies wrapped up the first day of competition at the NCAA West Preliminary Track & Field Championships on Thursday at Hornet Stadium.
Utah State's best finish came from senior Jennifer Christensen in the high jump, where she tied for 16th with a leap of 1.75 meters (5-8.75).
"I'm happy with how today went," Christensen said. "It would have been a dream to qualify for nationals, but I'm proud I qualified for the preliminaries. I competed my hardest and put up a good fight. It was a good way to end my senior year.
"A few minutes before my clearance, I took a second to appreciate everything and everyone in my life who has supported me and ultimately brought me to that moment. I'm very blessed and thankful to be competing with great athletes at such a competitive level."
Added multi-events/jumps coach Erik Rasmussen: "I'm so happy for Jennifer. She has always been a great competitor and one of our most consistent jumpers. She made some important changes this year that really turned her into a better athlete. Those two qualities combined again today, and she put herself in a legitimate position to make it to the next round. Although she finished just outside the top-12, I couldn't be more happy with her and how she competed. I look forward to seeing what she does in the future."
Redshirt junior Michala Zilkey was the other Aggie to compete in the field events, as she placed 38th in the hammer with a toss of 55.69 meters (182-8.00).
"I felt good about my performance and getting the experience under my belt for this year sets me up well to do even better next year," Zilkey said. "The highlight of the day was getting the opportunity to compete in the hammer, especially against the caliber of athletes that were at this meet."
In the women's 10,000-meter run, senior Alyssa Snyder ran a time of 35:13.98, finishing 39th overall.
Junior Luke Beattie closed out day one in the men's 10,000-meter run, as he finished in 24th place with a time of 29:35.47.
