SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Utah State softball (26-25, 11-9 Mountain West) evened the series at 1-1 after defeating No. 22 San Diego State (34-13, 17-3 MW) 3-1 on Saturday.
The win marked USU's first victory over a ranked opponent since the Aggies defeated then-No. 1 Washington 7-4 in the opening game of the Campbell-Cartier Classic in San Diego on Feb. 19, 2010.
All three Utah State runs came in the top of the fourth inning. Sophomore second baseman Zaia Castruita got things started for the Aggies after she reached first and advanced to second on an Aztec throwing error before taking third on a wild pitch. Junior first baseman Makenzie Macfarlane scored Castruita with a single through the left side.
USU brought in a pair of pinch runners as junior Tyler Thornton came in for Macfarlane and freshman Ariel Lopez entered after a single to left center from freshman designated player Taryn Edds. Thornton and Lopez each advanced a base on a passed ball before a sacrifice fly from senior left fielder Emily Tidd brought Thornton home. Senior right fielder Sydnee Smith then plated Lopez with an RBI bunt single to give USU the 3-0 advantage.
San Diego State scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth as Utah State pulled away with the 3-1 Game 2 victory.
Kapri Toone pitched her sixth complete game of the season for the Aggies, recording one strikeout and three walks on Saturday.
USU and SDSU will face off in the final game of the series on Sunday, May 8, at 1 p.m. (MT).
