CLOVIS, California — Utah State track & field continued competition at the Mountain West Outdoor Championships, securing another eight top-five finishes in Friday's events and keeping pace in a crowded race in the team standings.
The Aggie women sit in fourth place with 28.50 points, which would tie for the program's best-ever placement at the MW Outdoor Championships. The men, meanwhile, currently stand in fifth place with 30 points.
The Aggies recorded another two podium finishes on Friday in the men's high jump and 3,000-meter steeplechase. Junior
Kelton Chenworth finished on the podium in the high jump for the third-consecutive year, placing third with a mark of 2.03 meters (6-8.00).
In the men's steeplechase, junior
Max Wehrli placed third for the second-straight year, finishing with a time of 8:46.79. Graduate senior
Mark Crandall also finished fifth with a time of 8:53.31, while freshman
Logan Garnica finished just outside the points in ninth with a time of 9:02.62.
The Aggie men gained another pair of top-five finishes in the men's shot put. Junior
Gavin Beierle finished fourth with a mark of 16.88 meters (55-4.75), while junior
Brandon Ovington recorded a final throw of 16.55 meters (55-4.75) to take fifth. Sophomore
Nate Franz also finished 11th with a mark 15.64 meters (51-3.75), and junior
Calvin Knapp took 14th with a mark of 14.56 meters (47-9.25).
In the day's preliminary events, the Utah State men advanced five athletes to Saturday's finals. Senior
Zach Meyer qualified with a seventh-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles and a time of 14.46. In the 400 meters, freshman
Rylan Anderson advanced with a time of 48.10 to finish eighth. Seniors
Spencer Eldridge and
Zack Bell also placed 11th and 12th, respectively, with time of 49.52 and 49.95.
Three Aggies qualified out of the preliminary round of the 1,500 meters as senior
Spencer Nelson recorded a time of 3:47.08 to qualify out of the first heat. Senior
Devin Pancake and freshman
Drew Hogan then advanced out of the second heat with times of 3:52.73 and 3:53.40.
Elsewhere for the men, senior
Skyler Andam placed 10th in the long jump with a mark of 6.83 meters (22-5.00), and sophomore
Joshua Hartvigsen finished 11th with a mark of 6.27 meters (20-7.00).
On the women's side, the 3,000-meter steeplechase provided much of USU's team points as four Aggies finished in the top-eight of the event. Seniors
Abby Jensen and
Bailey Brinkerhoff led the way, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 10:23.73 and 10:24.90. Sophomore
Camilla McKinstry finished sixth with a time of 10:27.09, and junior
Sammi Lee rounded out USU's scorers in the event with a seventh-place finish and a time of 10:28.12.
Junior
Emma Shippen secured USU's final point of the day with an eighth-place finish in the pole vault with first-attempt clearance of 3.58 meters (11-9.00). Sophomores
Mikayla Dalton and
Mariah Jenkins also placed 11th and 20th in the event, respectively, with marks of 3.58 meters (11-9.00) and 3.28 meters (10-9.00).
Senior
Dolly Gabri and freshman
Milly Garren each finished in the top-10 in the women's shot put, as Gabri finished ninth with a mark of 14.69 meters (48-2.50) and Garren placed 10th with a mark of 14.19 meters (46-6.75).
Four Aggies advanced out of the women's preliminary rounds on Friday, with two each in the 100-meter hurdles and the 1,500 meters. In the hurdles, junior
Abbey Bryant set a new personal-best time of 13.59 to qualify in fourth place. Bryant's time ranks seventh all-time in the event at USU. Freshman
Krysthina Vlahovic also reached the finals, finishing seventh in the prelims with a personal-best time of 14.07.
Sophomore
Mimi Miyazawa and graduate senior
Mica Rivera each advanced out of the prelims of the 1,500 meters. Miyazawa finished with a time of 4:28.50 to advance out of the first heat, and Rivera set a personal-best time of 4:25.87 to qualify from the second heat. Rivera's time moves her to seventh all-time in the event at USU. Also in the event, junior
Hannah Davidson placed 15th with a time of 4:33.18 and freshman
Morgan Nygren finished 18th with a time of 4:35.52.
In the 400 meters, junior
Autumn Kidd led USU with a 13th-place finish and a time of 57.68. Junior
Delphine Dah finished 14th with a time of 57.98 and freshman
Abigail Peterson took 16th with a time of 1:00.02.
