FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas — Utah State track & field totaled three top 20 finishes on day three of the NCAA West First Rounds at John McDonnell Field on Friday.

In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, senior Mark Crandall took 14th with a time of 8:50.05, junior Max Wehrli finished 16th with a time of 8:51.60 and sophomore Logan Garnica placed 28th with a time of 9:06.13.

"Max and Mark really gave it a go in the steeple," said Artie Gulden, USU's director of track & field and cross country. "They were both in position to qualify in the last lap and couldn't quite get there. They both ran their hearts out. I am sure this will give Max even more motivation for next year. We will miss Mark. He's been a fantastic competitor and leader for our team. Logan gained some great experience getting here and, like Max, will return next year very hungry."

Freshman Landon Bott finished 18th in the quarterfinal round of the men's 800 meters with a time of 1:49.78.

"Landon had a great freshmen year accomplishing so much," Gulden said. "You tell any of us back in December that he'd be 18th in the west and we'd be thrilled."

In the men's triple jump, junior Godwin Charles placed 24th with a mark of 15.34 meters (50-4).

"Godwin had a great season as well," Gulden said. "Super proud of him and what he brings to our team."

Freshman Joseph Turner took 39th in the men's discus with a mark of 51.04 meters (167-5), while senior Gavin Beierle finished 42nd with a mark of 50.21 meters (164-8).

"The discus guys competed well," Gulden said. "Gavin getting here, in two events was fantastic and, like some of the other guys, Joseph will return next year very hungry to not only get here but move on as well."

The Aggie women will conclude their competitions at the NCAA West First Rounds tomorrow with junior Maddie Edwards in the 400-meter hurdles quarterfinals and freshman Shelby Jensen, junior Sammi Lee and seniors Abby Jensen and Bailey Brinkerhoff-Todd in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
