POCATELLO, Idaho — Utah State track & field won 13 titles, earned 28 podium finishes and posted a top-10 performance in school history at the Stacy Dragila Invitational in Pocatello, Idaho, on Friday.
The women's middle-distance runners had a day to remember in Pocatello. Senior
Adi Nielson ran a season-best 56.01 to win the 400 meters, and freshmen
Mashaylee Jones and
Elly Jeppsen joined her on the podium with their personal-best times of 56.35 and 57.09, respectively.
Aggie runners swept the podium again in the 800 meters, where junior
Alison Richter won the race in 2:14.07, freshman
Jocelyn Capener finished second in 2:17.67, and freshman
Erin Higgs claimed third with a time of 2:19.04.
USU wrapped up their run of success with a win in the women's 4x400-meter relay. The team of junior
Sophie Chandler, Jeppsen, Jones, and Higgs put up a time of 3:46.66 that ranks in the top 100 in the nation and the best of any Aggie relay team this season.
Freshman
Brenly Douglas climbed further up the Utah State record book in the women's 60 meters, where her time of 7.66 moved her from eighth to sixth all-time. Douglas, who placed second in the event, was followed by sophomore
Breanna Raven, who finished third in 7.78 in the first 60-meter race of her career.
Junior
Krysthina Vlahovic added another solid performance in the women's 60-meter hurdles, finishing first with a time of 8.56. Sophomore
Claire Petersen ran 8.81 to finish third in the event.
Aggies claimed the top-two places in the men's mile run with freshman
Luke Stockett winning the race in 4:16.28 and sophomore
Garrett Woodhouse following just behind in 4:16.84.
Junior
Malia Lowe had a strong performance in the women's mile, winning the competition with a time of 5:02.71 that beat her previous personal best by almost 10 seconds.
The Aggie throwers had a collectively impressive performance on Friday, claiming podium finishes in all four throwing events. Sophomore
Joseph Turner started off the meet with a title in the men's weight throw, uncorking a personal-best 16.85 meters (55-3.5). Senior
Nate Franz added a title in the men's shot put, where his mark of 18.35 meters (60-2.5) beat the rest of the field by over five feet.
On the women's side, junior
Milly Garren claimed two podium finishes by herself, winning the shot put with a throw of 14.58 meters (47-10) and placing second in the weight throw with a mark of 16.84 meters (55-3).
USU also excelled in the high jump competitions. Freshman
Taite Priestley won the men's competition with a collegiate-best clearance of 2.08 meters (6-9.75). Freshman
Presley Gray kept the Aggie success going in the women's competition, winning with a height of 1.73 meters (5-8) that lies a centimeter shy of her personal best.
Juniors
Marshall Rasmussen and
Javin Richards each cleared 5.05 meters (16-6.75) to claim the top-two places in the men's pole vault. Freshman
Abbie Scott won the women's pole vault competition with a height of 3.85 meters (12-7.5), while freshman
Lucy Jeppson's clearance of 3.70 meters (12-1.5) was tied for the second-best in the field.
Six members of the Utah State men's middle-distance squad competed in the 800 meters at the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nevada. Graduate
Brennan Benson won with a time of 1:48.56 that broke his personal record set two weeks prior on the same track at the Nevada Invite. His time also reset his Reno-Sparks Convention Center facility record and his third-place time in Utah State history. Sophomore
Landon Bott placed second in the event with a time of 1:49.41, while juniors
Sam Green and
Ernest Green placed third and fourth with times of 1:50.60 and 1:50.65, respectively. The twins' times rank seventh and ninth in school history.
Next week, Utah State will split their squad between the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, the Valentine Invite in Boston, Massachusetts, and the Mountain State Games in Pocatello, Idaho, on Friday and Saturday, February 14-15.
