POCATELLO, Idaho — Utah State track & field won 11 titles, earned 29 podium finishes and posted eight performances that rank in the top 10 all-time in school history at the Snake River Open in Pocatello, Idaho, which was held January 16-17.
"We accomplished a lot these last two days and were able to do a lot of things that we hoped," said
Artie Gulden, USU's director of track & field and cross country. "We had lots of top-10 marks again in a lot of different event groups, a lot of wins, and Logan (Hammer) broke his own school record and the ISU facility record."
Freshman
Abbie Scott kicked off the Aggies' run of success on Thursday by winning the women's pole vault with a clearance of 4.00 meters (13-1.5). Her mark vaulted her from third to second all-time in Utah State history, behind only Sonia Grabowska's record 4.25 meters (13-11.25), which was set in 2011.
Junior
Logan Hammer broke his own school record in the pole vault by clearing 5.55 meters (18-2.5). The Nampa, Idaho native also broke the ICCU Dome facility record of 5.54 meters (18-2) that had stood since 2002. Junior
Javin Richards took second place in the event with a clearance of 5.10 meters (16-8.75) that ties his personal best and ranks seventh in school history.
Utah State's trio of freshman sprinters
Daniel Chase,
Diego Aguirre-Stewart, and
Ayodele Ojo swept the podium in the 60 meters, the third-straight meet in which they claimed the top three places in the sprint event. Chase's first-place time of 6.70 tied his personal best that also ranks third in school history. Ojo's preliminary time of 6.73, best of all the heats, moved him from 10th into a tie for sixth all-time in Aggie history.
Chase added another individual title in the 200 meters, which he won with a career-best time of 21.67, while Aguirre-Stewart earned himself another second-place finish in the 400 meters.
On the women's side, senior
Emma Reeves ran her preliminary race in 7.62, the fourth-fastest 60 meters in Utah State history. Freshman
Brenly Douglas would soon join her in the USU record books, running the 60-meter final in 7.73 to move into ninth all-time.
Sophomore
Breanna Raven won the women's long jump with a leap of 5.76 meters (18-10.75). Her performance ranks as the seventh-best long jump in school history, making this the third event, along with the indoor and outdoor triple jump, in which Raven ranks seventh all-time. Sophomore
Elle Jacobson jumped 5.34 meters (17-6.25) to finish third in the long jump.
In the women's 200 meters, freshman
Camryn Ere blew away the field with a winning time of 24.35 that now ranks fifth all-time in Utah State history. Reeves took third place with a career-best time of 24.77.
Senior
Nate Franz also moved himself up the Utah State record book in the men's shot put, posting a mark of 18.47 meters (60-7.25) to place second in the event and move from sixth to fifth all-time at USU.
USU saw strong performances from each of its teams in the mile run. Sophomore
Caroline Moon claimed the women's title in a career-best 4:57.26 while sophomore
Shelby Jensen took third with a time of 5:03.08. On the men's side, graduate
Brennan Benson crossed the line first with a tie of 4:08.33, followed by graduate
Max Wehrli's second-place time of 4:12.36.
The 3,000 meters was also kind to the Aggies with USU student-athletes claiming four of the six podium places. Junior
Logan Garnica won the men's race in a career-best time of 8:16.61, edging out junior
LJ Floyd's second-place time of 8:16.86. Sophomore
Natalie Swain and junior
Sarah Ellis claimed second and third with times of 9:51.54 and 9:53.98, respectively, each beating their previous career-highs by over 30 seconds.
Junior
Krysthina Vlahovic put together another strong showing in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the event in a time of 8.51 that ties her season best.
Freshman
Taite Priestley claimed the men's high jump title with a career-best clearance of 2.06 meters (6-9).
"I'm really pleased with how everyone competed collectively," said Gulden. "We used the momentum from last week to build into this week. Hopefully, we can continue to do that moving forward and have the same type of improvements, progress and results each week."
Next week, Utah State will travel west to Reno, Nevada, on Friday and Saturday, January 24-25, for the Nevada Invite.
