TUCSON, Arizona — Utah State track & field began the 2022 outdoor season at the Willie Williams Classic hosted by the University of Arizona, taking home four titles across the two-day competition. The Aggies also registered 15 top-three finishes.
The men and women were each responsible for two titles. For the women, sophomore Gia Malone took first place in the high jump with a mark of 1.60 meters (5-3.00). Junior Bailey Brinkerhoff took home the second title for the Aggies in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, finishing with a time of 11:10.07.
On the men's side, sophomore Kelton Chenworth completed USU's sweep of the men's and women's high jump, finishing first with a jump of 2.05 meters (6-8.75). Sophomore Ben Hoffman also finished second in the event with a mark of 2.00 meters (6-6.75). Senior Zach Meyer claimed Utah State's final title in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.51.
Three women also broke into the top 10 all-time in outdoor events at Utah State. In the pole vault, sophomore Maren Garnett set the fifth-best mark in school history at 3.83 meters (12-6.75), finishing second overall in the event.
Two Aggies then finished with top-10 all-time marks in the women's javelin. Freshman Valerie Clark, in her first collegiate meet, set the sixth-best mark in Utah State history with a throw of 45.14 meters (148-1). Sophomore Djamilliah Paepke-Chile then improved to the eighth-best mark in program history at 43.30 meters (142-0).
Utah State now has two weeks to prepare for a two-meet weekend on Friday through Saturday, April 1-2. The Aggies will venture to California to compete in the Stanford Invitational as well as the West Coast Relays in Fresno.
