KICKOFF COVERAGE
• Utah State won the Mountain Division of the Mountain West via a tie-breaker with Air Force as both teams finished 6-2 in conference play, but the Aggies defeated the Falcons on the road, 49-45. USU was picked to finish fifth in the Mountain Division in the preseason polls.
• Utah State is appearing in the Mountain West Championship game for the second time in its nine years in the MW, as it lost at No. 24 Fresno State (24-17) in the inaugural championship game in 2013.
• Utah State's two appearances in the Mountain West Championship are the fourth-most by any team, including the second-most by a Mountain Division school. Boise State has played in five championship games, Fresno State has played in four and San Diego State is appearing in its third this year. Air Force, Hawai'i, San José State and Wyoming have all played in one championship game.
• Utah State is 6-0 on the road for the first time in school history and those six road wins are a school record. In fact, there have only been three teams in school history to not lose or tie a road game (1907 (1-0), 1911 (2-0), 1923 (4-0)). USU is also one of just three teams in the nation to go 6-0 on the road this year (Cincinnati, Houston) and one of eight teams not to lose a road game (Air Force, Cincinnati, Georgia, Houston, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh and San Diego State.
• Utah State's nine wins are tied for the fourth-most in school history as it is just the eighth time ever that a USU team has won nine or more games (1960, 1961, 1972, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2021). USU has only won 10-plus games in a season three times in school history (2012, 2014, 2018). It is also just the seventh time in school history that USU has won six or more league games.
• Utah State's eight-game improvement is tied with Michigan State (2-5 in '20 to 10-2 in '21) and Northern Illinois (0-6 in '20 to 8-4 in '21), and trailing Michigan (2-4 in '20 to 11-1 in '21) for the second-best turnaround in the nation as the Aggies were 1-5 last season and are 9-3 this year.
• San Diego State (53-19) and Utah State (43-28) rank No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, for best records against Mountain West opponents (including championship games) since USU joined the league in 2013. Boise State (59-15) has the best record in the league during that time.

• Utah State (9-3, 6-2 MW) plays at No. 19 San Diego State (11-1, 7-1 MW) in the Mountain West Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. (MT). • Utah State is 5-63 all-time against Associated Press-ranked teams, but has won four of its last 13 meetings against top-25 competition, including its 35-20 win at No. 18 BYU in 2014, as the Cougars are the highest-ranked AP team the Aggies have ever defeated. USU's last win against an AP Top 25 team was in 2015 as it posted a 52-26 home win against No. 21 Boise State. LAST MEETING vs. SAN DIEGO STATE
LOGAN, Utah - Utah State junior WR Deven Thompkins tied his career-high with six receptions for 55 yards and one touchdown as the Aggies opened the home portion of their schedule with a 38-7 Halloween night loss to San Diego State on Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium.

Thompkins' touchdown reception – his first of the season – was a thing of beauty as he hauled in the 37-yard, over-the-shoulder catch from junior QB Jason Shelley on the final play of the first half. The score pulled the Aggies (0-2, 0-2 Mountain West) to within 10-7 of the Aztecs heading into the half.

Whatever momentum Utah State gained from Thompkins' half-ending touchdown was short-lived, however. That's because San Diego State (2-0, 2-0 MW) scored touchdowns on its first four drives of the second half.

The Aztecs effectively took the wind out of the Aggies' sails on the very first drive of the third quarter. Following a sack by Utah State senior DL Justus Te'i and senior ILB Cash Gilliam, SDSU was facing second-and-26 from its own 9-yard line. USU couldn't get off the field, though, as SDSU RB Greg Bell picked up 16 yards on the second-down play, and QB Carson Baker hooked up with TE Daniel Bellinger for another 16 yards and the first down. Six running plays later, the Aztecs were in the end zone courtesy of a 6-yard run by Bell to make it 17-7 for the visitors with 9:56 to go in the third.

Utah State went three-and-out on the ensuing possession and punted the ball back to San Diego State, which went 68 yards to paydirt in six plays, opening up a 24-7 lead following a 27-yard touchdown run by Chance Bell.

Greg Bell led SDSU's ground attack with 157 yards and the one touchdown on 22 carries. Chance Bell added 98 yards and another touchdown on 10 carries, while Jordan Byrd scored on a 73-yard touchdown run.

San Diego State finished with 570 yards of total offense, including 407 on the ground alone. Baker completed 18-of-27 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns.

Utah State ended the night with just 215 total yards – 112 through the air and 103 on the ground. Senior RB Devonta'e Henry-Cole led the Aggies on the ground with 27 yards on 11 carries. Shelley was 13-of-21 for 88 yards with one touchdown and one interception through the air.

Sophomore QB Andrew Peasley replaced Shelley in the fourth quarter and completed five of his nine passes for 24 yards and an interception.

Defensively, Utah State senior S Shaq Bond tied his career high in tackles (12) and pass breakups (2). He also had 1.0 tackles for loss. Gilliam had a career-high 11 tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss and 0.5 sacks.

San Diego State had three players record five tackles apiece in Taylor Hawkins, Darren Hall and Andrew Aleki.

LAST ROAD MEETING vs. SAN DIEGO STATE
SAN DIEGO, California - Junior RB Jaylen Warren rushed for 74 yards and one touchdown and senior PK Dominik Eberle kicked three field goals as Utah State held on for a 23-17 Mountain West road win at San Diego State on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019.

This was the Aggies' first victory over San Diego State since a 31-25 road win on Nov. 25, 1967, snapping a 10-game losing skid to the Aztecs.

Junior QB Jordan Love threw for 297 yards, completing 30 of his 47 pass attempts, to help Utah State (2-1, 1-0 Mountain West) open a 23-3 lead with 10:53 remaining in the third quarter after Eberle kicked his third field goal of the night, a 32-yarder.

The Aztecs (3-1, 0-1) made it interesting in the fourth quarter, though, as quarterback Ryan Agnew threw a pair of touchdown passes – a 25- and 49-yarder, respectively – both of which were on fourth down. The second of the two came with 5:19 remaining, pulling the hosts within 23-17.

San Diego State got the ball back one more time on its own 25-yard line with 1:18 to go after Eberle missed a 42-yard field goal. Agnew completed a 14-yard pass on the opening play, but misfired on his next three attempts before redshirt junior DE Justus Te'i slammed the door on the Aztecs by sacking the SDSU signal caller for a loss of 37 yards.

Utah State finished with 375 yards of total offense, just three better than SDSU. Agnew was 20-of-37 for 281 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw a costly interception in the first quarter, which was picked off by USU junior S Shaq Bond and returned 48 yards for the first touchdown of the game.

The second pick-six of Bond's career gave the Aggies a 7-3 lead with six minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Bond finished with eight tackles, including a career-best 1.5 tackles for loss, and a pass breakup.

Senior DE Tipa Galeai tied his career high with 3.0 tackles for loss for the Aggies, senior CB Cameron Haney added a career-high-tying three pass breakups and junior LB Kevin Meitzenheimer had nine tackles to match his personal best.

Senior graduate transfer WR Siaosi Mariner was Love's favorite target on the night as he caught seven passes for 74 yards. Junior WR Savon Scarver added five receptions for 90 yards, both of which were career highs.

San Diego State took the opening kickoff and ate up more than seven minutes off the clock, but had to settle for a 22-yard field goal by Matt Araiza to give the hosts a 3-0 lead.

Utah State proceeded to score the next 23 points, beginning with Bond's pick-six. Field goals of 30 and 29 yards, respectively, by Eberle made it 13-3 with 3:27 to play in the first half, but the Aggies weren't done putting points on the board.

Utah State forced SDSU to punt late in the half and the Aggies took over on their own 20 with 1:15 remaining. Seven plays and 80 yards later, USU was in the end zone courtesy of an 11-yard touchdown run by Warren to give the guests a 20-3 lead at the break.

USU senior PK Josh Thompson then successfully executed an on-side kick that was recovered by redshirt freshman LB Nick Vigil at the Fresno State 45. The Aggies then drove the ball down to the FS 3-yard line before settling for a 20-yard field goal from junior PK Nick Diaz

After that, Utah State's defense forced the Bulldogs to turn the ball over on downs twice in the final 4:00, but was unable to score the tying touchdown.
