LOGAN, Utah — Utah State track & field opened this weekend's competitions with two titles and seven top-five finishes across four meets on Friday.
At the Arkansas-hosted Tyson Invitational, sophomore Logan Hammer won the men's pole vault, clearing 5.42 meters (17-9.25). Hammer's personal record improves his mark as third-best all-time in USU history. The performance leads the Mountain West and is tied for 18th-best in the nation.
Junior Nate Franz won the men's shot put at the Idaho State-hosted Mountain State Games with a mark of 16.53 meters (54-2.75). Senior Gavin Beierle finished second with a mark of 16.42 meters (53-10.50) and senior Brandon Ovington took fifth with a mark of 15.99 meters (52-5.50) in the event.
At the Washington-hosted Husky Classic, the Aggies' best finish was 19th in the men's 5,000 meters accomplished by senior Spencer Nelson with a time of 14:01.51. With the time, Nelson now ranks fifth all-time in USU history.
Junior Sammi Lee was the top USU finisher in the New Mexico-hosted Don Kirby Invitational, taking seventh in the women's 3,000 meters with a time of 10:21.35.
Additionally at the Mountain State Games, freshman Jedidiah Megargel took second in the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 14:44.44, while sophomore Milly Garren placed third in the women's shot put with a mark of 14.07 meters (46-2.0). The Utah State women's DMR team, consisting of sophomore Morgan Nygren, freshman Julia Stuard, senior Taylia Norris and freshman Caroline Moon, finished third with a time of 12:21.21. In the women's pole vault, freshman Sabrina Fairbanks cleared a height of 3.71 meters (12-2.0) to finish fourth. Senior Caden Dupee took fifth in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.59 meters (21-7.50).
Utah State continues all four meets tomorrow morning beginning at 9 a.m. (MT).
