Utah State Track & Field Claims Three Gold Medals on Final Day of Mountain West Outdoor Championships

CLOVIS, Calif. — Utah State track & field athletes won seven medals, earned 83 team points and posted four performances, including a school record, that rank in the top-10 in school history on the third and final day of the 2026 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Clovis, California, on Saturday.

"I'm really proud of both our teams," said Artie Gulden, USU's director of track & field and cross country. "We have four conference champions and 16 that will receive All-Mountain West recognition, which I believe is the most we've had in a very long time."

Senior Logan Hammer won his seventh career gold medal in the men's pole vault, clearing 5.55 meters (18-2.5) in the victory. Hammer entered the competition at 5.38 meters (17-7.75) and clinched the victory on his first attempt. After clearing the 5.55-meter bar on his third attempt, the four-time All-American attempted a bar of 5.71 meters (18-8.75) that would have set the Utah State and MW record but just nicked the bar on his way down on the third attempt. Hammer became the first Aggie and fourth MW athlete in history win the same event at four-straight MW outdoor championships. Senior Marshall Rasmussen added two more team points as he finished seventh, clearing 4.83 meters (15-10) on a windy Saturday afternoon in Clovis.

Junior Landon Bott claimed his second-straight outdoor 800-meter title, and his third MW gold medal of his career, with his winning time of 1:48.18. Trailing New Mexico's Matthew Endrody on the final lap, Bott fought through headwinds on the back stretch, made his move to the front at the 600-meter mark and held off the field to defend his title. The indoor All-American joined Clay Lambourne (2016, 2018) as the only Aggies to win the MW 800-meter title twice. Senior Ernest Green took fourth place with a time of 1:49.85, increasing his career MW point total to 47 over his two-year Aggie career.

The men's 4x100-meter relay team of sophomore Daniel Chase, sophomore Mathew Hall, freshman David Konan and sophomore Ayodele Ojo, Jr. claimed the relay title with a time of 39.87. Chase started strong to get the Aggies into a top-three position, from which Hall and Konan would set up Ojo to claim the lead on the final leg. The quartet also moved from eighth to sixth in USU history with their efforts. Utah State won their first 4x100-meter relay title since 2014, when Jacob Bautista Jr., Nic Bowens, Parker Bluth and Silas Pimentel won the MW title with a program-record time of 39.44.

Ojo continued his stretch of excellence later in the afternoon in the 100 meters, where he broke the Utah State program record and claimed silver with a time of 10.09. Ojo was neck-and-neck with Grand Canyon's Miguel Rosario, with Rosario crossing the line four-thousandths of a second faster in a photo finish. The indoor All-American beat Bowens' 2014 time of 10.13 while also setting the fifth-fastest time in MW history. Konan took fifth place, finishing in 10.39 but losing a photo finish of his own to Grand Canyon's Conner Kittleson for fourth.

Junior Claire Petersen won the bronze medal in the women's 100-meter hurdles, finishing strong with a time of 13.44 to reach the podium. The Idaho Falls, Idaho, native set her fourth personal-best of the outdoor season in the event, with Saturday's effort moving her from ninth to third in Utah State history in the event as she earned her first career MW medal. Senior Krysthina Vlahovic finished fifth with a season-best time of 13.71, tying her best career finish at the MW championships. San Diego State's Jada Pierre won the final with a time of 13.18.

Sophomore Shay Jones claimed the bronze medal in the women's 400 meters, clocking in at 52.44. The Plano, Texas, native closed well down the stretch to secure her first career MW medal. New Mexico's Eva Ngom won the title with her time of 51.98.

Petersen and Jones teamed up with sophomore Heidi Harper and graduate Annie Ivins to claim bronze in the women's 4x400-meter relay. The quartet closed the women's program with their finishing time of 3:38.88. Harper opened the race with a career-best split of 52.76 before Ivins and Petersen set up Jones with a fourth-place standing heading into the final leg, which Jones ran in a field-best 51.78 to reach the podium. New Mexico won the relay, finishing in 3:36.72.

Freshman Gracynn Smith took fifth place in the women's 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 59.75 to claim her first career points at a conference meet. Smith qualified ninth for the final but ran a clean race to improve on her seed. Colorado State's Neya Jamison won the title with her time of 57.02.

The men's 4x400-meter relay team of sophomore Diego Aguirre-Stewart, Bott, Hall and senior Samuel Green earned a sixth-place finish, crossing the line in 3:15.11. The quartet secured three team points despite not having competed together in a relay. New Mexico won the relay title, posting a collective time of 3:09.68.

Ivins ran her 800-meter final in 2:07.11, the second-fastest time in Utah State history, as she placed seventh in the field. The Utah transfer beat her previous personal best by almost tow seconds as she moved up from fifth to second, ranking only behind Mattie Geddes' standard of 2:06.45 which was set at the 2024 MW championships. Boise State's Kaiya Robertson claimed the 800-meter title with a time of 2:02.81.

Aguirre-Stewart added two team points in the men's 400 meters, finishing with a time of 47.27 to place seventh in the final. The men's 400-meter title was won by Colorado State's Kenny Carpenter, who finished in 45.84.

Junior Joshua Armstrong placed eighth in the final of the men's 1,500 meters, clocking in at 4:05.19 to claim another team point. Boise State's Alex Thompson won the 1,500 meters with his time of 4:03.72.

At the conclusion of the championships, the Aggie men claimed third place with 109 points while the USU women took eighth place with 47 points. Colorado State won the men's team title with 200 points and New Mexico won the women's title, collecting 190 points.

"We've had lots of inspiring performances these past few days," said Gulden. "We now look forward to the NCAA West prelims in a couple of weeks, where we hope to have more athletes than we've ever had at that meet."

Individual athletes will await selection to the NCAA West First Rounds, held from Wednesday-Saturday, May 27-30, in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
