Utah State Indoor Track & Field Performs Well at Pair of Meets

Aggies win two titles and record 16 top-10 finishes

LOGAN, Utah — Utah State track & field totaled two titles and 16 top-10 finishes at the New Mexico Team Open and the Washington Invitational this weekend. 

Highlighting the weekend's performances were freshman Landon Bott and junior Brennan Benson. Bott won the men's 800 meters at the New Mexico Open with a time of 1:49.05, which ranks as the third-best in school history, and Benson placed second in the men's 800 meters at the Washington Invitational with a time of 1:50.74, which is the seventh-best in USU history. 

At the Washington Invitational, three Aggies set top 10 marks in the women's mile. Senior Mattie Geddes placed 20th with a time of 4:46.82 (fourth-best in USU history), freshman Shelby Jensen took 32nd with a time of 4:49.53 (seventh-best in USU history), and Hannah Davidson finished 33rd with a time of 4:49.77 (eighth-best in USU history). 

Junior Emma Thornley finished fourth in the women's 5,000 meters with a time of 16:29.30, which ranks as the fourth-best time in school history. 

Senior Bridger Altice recorded the fifth-best indoor mile in USU history as he placed 22nd with a time of 4:03.63 in the men's mile in Seattle. 

In the men's 5,000 meters, three Aggies entered the top-10 record book. Junior Max Wehrli placed sixth with a time of 13:55.49 (fourth-best in USU history), freshman Johnathan Simmons finished eighth with a time of 14:14.21 (ninth-best in USU history), and freshman Bryce Hill took ninth with a time of 14:14.89 (10th-best in USU history). 

In the 3,000 meters, junior Mimi Miyazawa took 31st with a time of 9:42.94, which is the ninth-best time in USU history. 

Additionally, junior Maddie Edwards and senior Autumn Kidd were fifth and seventh in the women's 400 meters with times of 56.74 and 57.57, respectively. 

At the New Mexico Team Open, sophomore Logan Hammer finished eighth in the "A section" of the men's pole vault with a personal best mark of 5.21 meters (17-1), which ranks fifth all-time in school history. 

Junior Abbey Bryant placed fourth in the women's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.58, improving her fifth-place spot in the USU record book by 0.02 seconds. 

In the women's triple jump, senior Sidnee Naerebout took eighth with a mark of 12.05 meters (39-6.5), a mark that ranks sixth-best in school history. 

In the "C section" of the women's pole vault, freshman Paige Hansen took the title, clearing a mark of 3.70 meters (12-1.5). In the same event, junior Mikayla Dalton tied for third, clearing 3.40 meters (11-1.75) and freshman Sabrina Fairbanks finished sixth clearing the same mark. 

Other top-10 competition finishes at the New Mexico Team Open included junior Godwin Charles placing second in the men's triple jump with a mark of 15.61 meters (51-2.75), sophomore Javin Richards finishing third in section B of the men's pole vault with a mark of 4.76 meters (15-7.25), sophomore Milly Garren placing sixth in the women's shot put with a mark of 14.40 meters (47-3), senior Gavin Beierle placing ninth in the shot put with a mark of 16.35 meters (55-7.75), and the USU women's 4x400-meter relay team of junior Emma Reeves, senior Olivia Smith, sophomore Alison Richter and Nielson placing ninth with a time of 3:47.65.  

The Aggies continue their indoor season next weekend as they host the Utah State Speed and Power Meet on Saturday, Feb. 3, in the George Nelson Fieldhouse.
