Track and Field 2/5/2022 7:01:00 PM
LOGAN, Utah — For the first time since 2009, Utah State track & field hosted an indoor meet, holding the Aggie Speed and Power Meet at the George Nelson Fieldhouse on Saturday. The Aggies were joined by individual athletes from Weber State and UVU for the event.

"It's so fun to run in the place where you've seen yourself progress in workouts," sophomore Abbey Bryant said, "and to be able to see the results in the place where you've progressed personally during workouts. It's just an amazing feeling to get to do it here with my Utah State family. It's a good feeling. It just means a lot to be here."

With the benefits of a home meet, multiple Aggies registered career marks with multiple athletes etching their names into USU's record books. In the women's 60-meter hurdles, Bryant set a new personal-record and a facility record, clocking in with a time of 8.63. The mark places her fifth all-time in school history.

"I had a lot of positive energy going into a home meet," Bryant said. "Getting to race at home, getting to be somewhere that I feel comfortable and that I've trained in for two years. To be able to race at home and race next to two phenomenal runners as well, it was a close race and I knew that it was going to be a fight to the finish. It was unreal. It's awesome."

Four other women joined Bryant in the Aggie record books. Junior Gabriella Holmstrom placed first in the 60 meters with a time of 7.59, the third-best mark in school history and a new facility record. Senior Hailey Suit, who owns the second-best mark at USU, placed second in the event with a time of 7.67. Senior Maren Garnett tied for the fourth-best mark in the pole vault at Utah State, clearing a height of 3.80 meters (12-2.50) to win the event.

In the triple jump, sophomore Sidnee Naerebout recorded a mark of 11.66 meters (38-3.25) to put her in ninth place all-time at USU. In the women's weight throw, junior Tori Bailey also put herself into the all-time list, recording the sixth-best mark for an Aggie at 17.66 meters (57-11.25). Senior Maia Garren, who owns the all-time record at Utah State, won the event with a mark of 18.26 meters (59-11.00).

Sophomore Olivia Smith also set a facility record at the George Nelson Fieldhouse in the 600 meters with a time of 1:38.36. On the men's side, freshman Johnny Cruz also set a facility record for the 600 meters, clocking in at 1:21.89 for the event.

"It's been extremely special," head coach Matt Ingebritsen said. "I see a different kind of energy than I've seen at the other meets. The kids are really excited to be here and competing at home. Even though it's a smaller meet, it's been something that I've been wanting to do for such a long time. Everyone that's here is coming up to me and saying 'Hey, this is great. Let's keep doing this.' I think the kids are really going to enjoy this and it's something that we're going to get a lot out, especially going forward."

The meet served as a critical checkpoint for the Aggies en route to the Mountain West Indoor Championships, as USU has only one more weekend of competition remaining prior to the conference clash.

"For me, it was a solid performance," sophomore Gavin Beierle said after finishing first in the shot put with a mark of 17.82 meters (58-5.75). "But I'm really happy with the mark that I had today and I'm really happy with where our team is. I think that we're going to have a really good squad around indoor for Mountain West as well as outdoor. There's still stuff to work on for all of us but we're looking solid so far."

The Aggie Speed and Power Meet is the first indoor meet to be hosted in Logan since the USU Wilson Motor Invitational on January 17, 2009.

"I want to make this an annual thing," coach Ingebritsen said. "The Aggie Speed and Power Meet is one I want to continue to build and try to get more and more teams here. I know it's a small venue, there's not a lot of places to sit, but we can really turn this into something cool."

Up next for Utah State will be a split weekend of competition to conclude the regular season, as the Aggies will be represented at both the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the Mountain State Games in Pocatello, Idaho. Both meets will take place over two days on Friday, February 11, and Saturday, February 12.
