Fern Gardner helped establish and organize the women's intercollegiate athletic program at Utah State in 1972. Gardner coached basketball, softball and volleyball during her seven-year tenure. She guided Utah State to its first-ever appearance in the AIAW National Championships as the women's basketball coach. In 1972, both the basketball and volleyball teams advanced to the AIAW playoffs. In 1972 and 1973, Gardner led the women's basketball team to four-straight regional titles plus four consecutive trips to the AIAW Championships. From 1972-75, she compiled 144-33 record as the women's basketball coach.

Gardner was a four-sport standout as a Utah State undergraduate, participating in basketball, softball, tennis and volleyball. Gardner is a member of the Utah Sports, Utah Amateur Softball Associations and NACDA Halls of Fame.
