Ralph Maughan earned a total of 11 letters at Utah State while competing in football, basketball and track and field. Maughan was a two-time all-conference center in football from 1946-47 and was a second-team all-conference choice in basketball in 1943. Maughan found his greatest success in track and field, winning three conference championships in the hammer from 1946-48 and two league titles in the javelin in 1947 and 1948. He also won the 1946 AAU National Championship in the hammer, and finished fifth in the javelin at the 1947 NCAA Championships. He also qualified for the 1948 Olympics in the hammer throw.

Maughan played one season of professional football with the Detroit lions in 1949. He returned to Utah State in 1951 as an assistant basketball, football and track coach. Maughan coached Aggie athletes for a total of 37 years, and as head track coach, he tutored 11 All-Americans, four Olympians, two NCAA champions, two world record holders and two NCAA record holders. Maughan guided the Aggie track and field teams to nine top-20 finishes in the NCAA Championships, including an eighth-place showing in 1958.

The USU track facility was named Ralph Maughan Track and Field Stadium in 1971 in recognition for his lasting contributions to the program. He retired as head track coach in 1988. Maughan passed away on July 3, 2006, at the age of 83.
