George "Doc" Nelson retired in 1958 after 38 years of service as the athletic trainer at Utah State. The Fieldhouse on campus was renamed in his honor on February 25, 1956. He received the Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame Award for his noteworthy achievements in athletic training. Nelson was also inducted into the Utah Sports Hall of Fame. He established the wrestling program at Utah State in 1923 and coached the Aggies to 13 state wrestling championships, 10 Western Division Rocky Mountain Conference titles, and one Intermountain AAU crown.

Nelson passed away in 1970.
